This is for a '95 Discovery with an R380 5-speed. I put in a kit from Atlantic British 20,000 miles ago. Although it's not slipping (yet), it's noisy and there's a fair amount of clutch judder when starting out in 1st & reverse, which is annoying. I believe it may have been an aftermarket kit because it came with two different throw out bearings. Does anyone know of a quality, heavy duty aftermarket clutch kit for this truck -- or is the factory clutch the way to go? Thanks, Norm |

I went with the OEM clutch and have had no problems, even pulling a trailer loaded with a Scout II up a steep gravel drive, and for several hundred miles of interstate in 5th gear. |

Norm, Did you resurface your flywheel when you replaced the clutch? How many miles on your truck when you had to replace it? I am about to replace my clutch on my 94'. I have 113,000 miles on it and it is starting to get grabby and make growling noise. I purchased an aftermarket clutch don't know the mfg. I will look tonight. neil |

I have used only OME clutch parts. It's not really expensive shit. The first clutch lasted 115,000 miles and was still fine but I changed it while the was out to be sure. The second one has about 65,000 miles to it's credit and also seems like new. Forget the cheap rebuilt stuff. That is one part you don't want crappin' out every year or so. BTW, make sure to replace the T/O plastic shuttle with a NEW one. That will solve the chatter woes. Lube it lightly with some graphite grease where it rides on the 's mainshaft. pk |

PK, getting 115,000 miles out of a clutch on any vehicle is a tribute to skillful driving. Bravo. I had the out of my BMW 540i recently -- only 60,000 miles -- and the clutch was pretty much fried. And I'm pretty easy on clutches. Of course that beast does have 286 horsepower . . . |

PK, What is this plastic shuttle you refer to? Does the throw out bearing actually mount on it? I can't believe they would put plastic bits into a clutch can. neil |

I just checked my clutch package. It is an AP clutch and the throw out bearing has a plastic coller on it. Is this the factory piece PK was talking about in his previous post? Thanks, neil |

Factory is borg and beck. Ironically the clutch is actually more durable than the R380 Ron |

The plastic shuttle is the collar you refer to. In actual fact it is some fiber glass or polymer composite and is quite durable. Ron is correct, the clutch will outlast the R380. It is a great gear box. It is strong and works well... it just don't last long. If you have a Disco with a 5 speed, you better drain the ATF and pour in Redline MTL tomorrow! pk |

I have used MTL in the gearbox and transfer case since I bought the truck. Really quieted down the drive train. neil |

Thanks for the info!!! I changed out the original clutch at 43K miles when I put in the 4.6 -- the pressure plate looked fried after years of "the little woman" driving the truck like a Lamborghini, so I figured I'd put in a new one as long as the thing was already disassembled. Can't remember if the flywheel was resurfaced -- probably not since the dealer did all the work. Next time I guess I'll stick with factory parts and get the flywheel done -- unless there's an aftermarket clutch out there that is better. ---Norm |
