I'm losing about a gallon of coolant a week and I've pinpointed it to between the firewall and rear of the engine (97 disco). From looking at the other posts, I'm seeing the same symptoms as a "valley gasket" leak, coolant residue on the black valley caover between the valve covers. What all do I have to take off to get to it, and should I go with a new gasket or make one myself? How much of a pain in the arse is it going to be getting to it? |

Gary: The valley gasket is in fact the intake manifold gasket-referred to as a valley gasket as it covers the entire space between the cylinder heads on each side. The gasket is not one that would lend itself to easy fabrication. It is a big sheet of metallic gasket material that stretches from the edge of the valve cover, under and back over to the other valve cover. To get to it, you essentially have to remove everything from the plenum to the top of the block and faces of the cylinder heads (bonnet to block). Sounds bad, but it's not as bad as it sounds. Much of the hardware can be left assembled and removed in complete assemblies. The gasket should cost somewhere between $20-$40 depending upon from whom you buy it. I would allow myself the better part of a weekend if I hadn't done it before. BUT---Before you tear it apart, see if tightening up all of the manifold gaskets helps any. It might buy you a few more months. Paul |
