I just purchased a 95 Disco, and I've been wondering about the lugnuts / spare tire.

The lugnuts are huge, about 1 1/4 inch. Are these just covers on the lugnuts? If so, how do you remove them? The nuts on the spare are about 1 inch as well.

Just a FYI, my Disco didnt have the tire iron under the back seat like it should, just an empty velcro strap.

Thanks for the help, sorry for being LR newbish.

That's the lug nut itself.

Welcome to the club. :)

Jared,

lug nuts are 1 1/16" - no those covers are not supposed to be removed - sometimes they get deformed from too many tire shop monkeys with 400 ft lb air guns, but other than that, they are good to go as is.

The nuts on the spare are also 1 1/16", but are NOT meant for use on an axle.

Buy your self a 1/2" x 20" breaker bar and a deep socket to carry in the truck - it will come in handy in the future.

Thanks for the quick response. I only had 1 flat tire while driving in my previous car *knock on wood*. However, I'd hate to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere with a spare tire on the back of the car just mocking me.

Thanks again,
Jared

check the pocket on the back of the front passenger seat for the tire iron and wheel lock I think I lest it there for you.

if you can score some, old range rover lug nuts are SOLID metal, no caps and are 1-1/16 or 27mm...

much nicer and dont get deformated like the permenently capped disco ones do.

i have heard that the disco ones rattle if they start to get loose and alert the driver... have heard this a few times. i guess thats one reason to keep them

Thats the way to go get a set of the old RR ones... Several places in the UK can get you new ones... Rattle to alert the driver like one more rattle and squeek will alert me... LOL Rob

The rear nuts (holding the spare on) are 1 1/16". However, the 1 1/16" socket wont fit on the actual lugnuts. I have to use a 1 1/8".

Fancy that.

ROB, you just aint dove it hard enough if its rattle free.. LOL

My Disco had many rattles when i bought it most were due to the rotted out woodheads and bent trailing arm. My old 88 RRC did a bit of a rattle untill i replace all the bushes. But dam that pig leaked oil and coolant

Hopefully the money pit will be up by next weekend. I found a donor engine for the Piston i needed...

good news, i found a small leak, my truck is a rover after all.. seems degreesing the area after the PS box install cleaned it up.

i never noticed because of the continuos pissing happening from that box. about 1/3 a teaspoon of motor oil a day, just enough to make me know there is some in their.

so far so good, it feels slightly tighter than the old ones. i love the improvements they made, i can see now that the problematic seal at the bottom where the splines are has been made internal.

The cover on the disco lug nuts is one of my pet peeves with these trucks. On a hot summer day they swell up to the point that it can be impossible to get a socket on. I've had to bang a socket on with a mallet, not a rubber mallet, and on a few occasions even that wouldn't work. swap them suckers out before you get yourself into a situation like this. Nathan has solid lugs for these trucks that don't stand out on the alloys. Remember, swollen nuts is NEVER good!................Get it dirty!

Ok - you had me worried - seems everyone's selling lately - guess that makes it a buyers market.

At the price lately, hell you might as well buy a couple! :)
