Okay, here's the deal. 98' D1 LSE. I've been having brake touble since mid-July. Started with an occasional abs pump activation that would kind of scare ya. Over the next month and a half, it continually got worse (from happening once a day to 2-3 times a day). Also, the ABS lihgt never came when the problem first started but then came on once in a while and now it is always on. I have a diagnostics computer (laptop and OBD-2.com) software, but I am receiving no codes. Tonight, I pulled the front wheels off (4 times) and removed the ABS sensors cleaned them and made sure they were seated completely. I'm at the end of my ropes. My wife isn't happy with me. I keep fixing things and more things break. (fan clutch, speed sensor, ABS???) Please help me in my quest for sanity. If I do need new ABS sensors, is there a cheap place to get them. I always buy from roverconnection.com. But the sensors are a little pricey. |

By the way, is there anything special I need to do to make the OBD-2.com software work with the rover. I just received my trimode connector tonight so I'm not real proficient with it yet. Thanks again, Jim |

Similar thing happened to me. It started with intermitent ABS light, and some random ABS action; but over the course of 2 weeks it just got worse. I read the archives, in regards to cost of repair, what the problem is, etc, and decided to just pull the fuse from the dash. It hasnt acted up once since I pulled the fuse. |

I think that deactivates the ABS system altogether. I want to avoid that. My wife and kids use the car most of the time. I like the ABS on. Plus, we live near chicago where the roads can et nasty in the winter. Does the Anti-lock light go out when you take the ABS fuse. Thanks Jim |

No the light stays on permantly. If it were someone else (other than me of course) that were driving the car, I too would have second thoughts about removing the ABS. Have you searched the old technical questions, from may -> last year? |

Jim, I know those symptoms too well. I've replaced two ABS sensors so far. You most likely have a bad sensor. If the ABS diagnostic plug isnt helping you, unplug the sensor from its harness and you will find two wires inside. Check their resistance. A bad sensor should have an infinite resistance. Assuming that method works (it did for me, but your results may vary), you can call Nathan at discount rovers. he sells the front sensors for about $200 each. I hate to say it, but thats the cheapest price out there. Pricey little bastards. |

Thanks Bill, I'll check it out as soon as I get back from a three day trip. I'd bet your right. Jim I'll post my results here. |

i think you are going to stop better in snow with abs shut off. |

your sensors may be out of alignment, I have noticed that often this is the cause, rather than simply a bad sensor...I"m not sure how to ensure they are aligned correctly however.. |

I pulled the plug on the ABS after similar problems due to bad sensors several months ago -- I haven't missed it at all. Eventually, I may replace the sensors if I have an extra $400 I couldn't use elsewhere. I think it's debatable how much good ABS would do you in these trucks anyway. SUVs aren't made for crash avoidance maneuvers -- they tend to roll. The ABS would actually lengthen your straight line stopping distance. If you're about to smack somebody (i.e. a smaller vehicle) it's better to just honk twice and hit the gas... ---Norm ...or you can do like Ron and drive around with your hand firmly gripping the parking brake at all times...just in case... |

ABS helps you keep control of the vehicle. If it lengthens the stopping distance, it isnt much, considering you can slide a good long way with tires locked. The reason for SUV's rolling is because of a loss of control. In other words, one tire may lock up, causing the vehicle to turn sideways while moving in a forward direction and then rolling. ABS will keep you in a straight line. I'm surprised that many prefer to run with no ABS. Maybe offroad its not a problem, but driving 75 mph on the highway, it can sure come in handy. |

Aw, hell, that's no fun -- just honk twice and the gas. What, are you one of those "safety first" Clydes who drive around with your hand on the parking brake all the time? Just get one of those heavy-duty 'roo catchers and reinforce it with some railroad ties. You'll be OK! |

OK, alignment. I did have the sensors out of their socket. Is it possible I moved the bushing out of alignment or put the sensor in the wrong way. Has anyone actually replaced a sensor and had it function afterwards. Does alignment really matter and if it does, does anybody know the proper alignment. Thank you all so much for your replies. Jim By the way, I don't really care about the ABS for myself, but if I don't get this fixed soon, my wife will replace the Rover with a minivan! Can't have it. (Yes, she does wear the pants in the family) {She also takes them off!!!} |
