My wife got me a 1 hour off road driving lesson and a 2 hour trail ride at the Land Rover Off-Road Center in Manchester VT. It is located at the Mount Equinox Hotel. You use their prepped Discos and Rangies. Woo-Hoo!!!

I can do it anytime, but I think I'll wait until Spring (Mud!)

Has anyone else done this? Do tell....

Yup, I did this at New Years and in March of last year. The Equinox is an excellent place. Likewise, the instructors at that school are very professional and very good people.

It was my first exposure to rovers. After both weekends, I ended up buying a used DII 1 month later.

It's become an addiction since...

Cool. Did you drive a Disco there?

There is also a good (but short) trail not far from there - only a couple miles from Manchester Ctr. Two years ago it was easy, last year only made it locked (trail washed out alot) similar to going up Dictum Ridge except longer - Beartown Gap.

David,

I went last May, also a gift from my wife. The Equinox is top-notch, though pricey. The LR people at the Driving School are, as Dave said, professional, nice, and also very patient; they didn't bat an eye when I came down a bit too hard on a rocky trail and knocked off one of the bumper end caps (that should tell you about my driving skill). They have Discos and Range Rovers, maybe even a Defender or two. I drove their Disco 2.

Also, there's a lot of places around Manchester to take your own vehicle off road.

I drove a D2 aqnd their D90, when I was there.

On this same subject.. anyone know where I can get a good off-road trails book or map of the New England area? I'm up in Windsor, VT specifically.

I've got Gazateers but they are not specific about where it is LEGAL to off-road. :-)

Dave,

On the outskirts of Manchester (you'd have to get a map), there's a trail called Beartown (or maybe Bearville..Bear something) Road that's pretty good, at least as I remember it. Lots of hunters use it to get back to their deer camps. I was brand new to the sport then so I might view it differently now, but there were some nice spots on that trail to try a variety of things.

Up the road near (I think) Dorset, VT, I found a road called Dorset Hollow Road that eventually becomes a nice track. Didn't get to explore all of it because ran out of daylight. I found both these trails using the Gazetteers. The people at the LR school were familiar with Beartown Road; they evidently take some of their trail rides there.
