When the crankcase ventalation hose is pulled off the right side valve cover there is a filter/flame trap of some type inside the valve cover port. Is that a replaceable item or is it supposed to be cleaned. Ours is clogged up causing the hose to collapse. The hose is the one that goes from the rear of the right side valve cover to the intake "plenium" located in the center of the engine. Thanks for the help! |

Andy: I can't tell you how often I hear folks say that they have to buy a new flame trap... Then, I proceed to remove the packing material and clean it up and put it back! Yessir, the home of the original Cheap Bastard, Paul's garage! Use a 1/2" socket extension to push the steel-wool-like material out of the can, unroll it and hose it down with diesel fuel. Allow it to air dry, roll it back up and stuff it back where it belongs and you're good to go. Caveats: I have yet to see one so bad it causes the hose to collapse, it is sometimes difficult to get all of the material back into the can and you may have to cut some off to make it fit, and be careful to allow it to dry fully, I'm sure the diesel fuel has to be a fire risk. The material inside the can seems to be some sort of expanded steel mesh that is just rolled up into a cyliner and stuffed into the can. Go for it! Paul |

Thanks Paul! I wonder if we are talking about the same engine. When the hose is removed the only thing that is there is the approx 1/2" to 3/4" diameter metal tube into the valve cover. Inside the tube there appears to be a plastic device which has what looks like a pin in the middle sticking up an 1/8" or so. This is the 4.0 L V8 with I believe what is called the advanced fuel tank recovery (not the correct description) on it. Does that sound familiar? I tried cleaning it in place but didn't have much luck.... |

Andy: I misspoke. I was speaking of the 3.9/4.0 that has the flame trap. Your vehicle thas the advanced evaporative recovery which is a different animal. I'll try to do some research this evening and see if I can find anything that will be of value to you. Sorry/ |

Andy to clean that you need to remove the valve cover and the baffle plate inside. If it is damage the only parts avail is the whole new cover. Im going to take mine apart tonight and see what makes it tick |

Thanks Dee.... I had kind of anticipated that and ordered new valve cover gaskets just in case. Ours is almost completely clogged up and it may need a good soaking. |

Andy, You can pull the advanced evaporative recovery valve core out. You have to remove the valve cover and the inner splash cover to aid in removing the valve core. I gues you could grab it from the outside with pliers but that could damage the core. I very carefully used a round wooden dowel to drive it out a few taps on the dowel and it came out. Prior to i soaked it with pb.
This is it mine was all gunked up Hope this helps be careful LR does not sell the the valve seperate at least when i looked at the parts sheet it was not listed |
