I have a 97 Disco with over 100k miles. Lately it seems, my vehicle exhibits some very strange rumbling and vibration. Coincidentally, I recently had my Pirelli Scorpion tires, which I liked, rotated after 15K miles. I was hesitant about getting them rotated because they drove so quietly and smoothly. Let me explain in more detail... I can't tell if the rumbling/vibration is tire, engine, or transmission related. It seems to occur right after I drive up a hill (on-road) at about 50-55 MPH. The shuddering will usually occur right after the transmission upshifts after I crest the hill. It also seems to happen sometimes when I am driving on the highway and simply release the throttle to slow down a bit. If I apply more throttle, then vibration seems to go away. Between the three (tires, engine, or transmission) my best guess would be a transmission problem (which is probably the most expensive to fix). But tires and/or suspension misalignments/issues do cause some very funky things on these Discos that you would not expect. I once had a bad steering damper that would force the steering wheel to oscilliate between the 10 and 2 o'clock positions violently for hundres of yards after hitting a bump on the highway. As for engine problems, it might be an idle adjustment, spark plug/wire, or engine management issue. Anybody experience the same thing. Bryan |

Had another thought... Could it be the parking brake dragging slightly on the driveshaft? Maybe that is why it seems to happen only when I let up on the throttle. I suppose with throttle applied, the drag is minimized? Or am I hoping for the quick/easy fix versus the expensive transmission/flywheel fix? Thanks Bryan |

The tires are not uni-directional to my knowledge. I specifically posted some comments on this board regarding tire rotation and even discussed with dealer. I could not attain a true consensus so I let the dealer decide what to do. Perhaps for my next set I will not rotate at all. when the front tires wear, I'll just replace them. Then when they wear again, I'll get a set of four. Yes, I go through tires quickly -- I put a tremendous amount of mileage on my car -- I am contacting the US Postal Service about how to have my mail forwarded to my car. |

Bryan. While this is not an apples to apples comparison I have a 2001 that had a similar problem from day 1. After 3 dealers attempting to correct I found (after replacing one tire and then having a tire dealer convice LR I had one bad rim) my troubles had 3 causes. One bad tire, one bad rim and several bad balance jobs. I had the exact same vibes problem after correction (wheel & rim replaced)...it took 3 visits to get the balance right.....trick was the tech used weighs on both the inside & outside of the rim and was ver percise about the job. My spare (which needs a rebalance)will produce that same exact vibe symptom you have...took me a year to get to this point....as the vibes with a bad rim & tire were far worse then just the balance problem....but the symptoms vibes were very similar. I panic at the thought of a tire rotation as I now have 95% of the problem fixed...and the simple act of taking a tire off and moving to another wheel can sometimes start the vibes over again. Try taking a wheel off (in my case the right or left rear as I felt the vibe in the seat of the car not the steering wheel)....and place that tire on the front. When I did that I noticed small vibes in the steering wheel (which on a good rim/tire & balance are not present). I used that process to determine if the tire was prefectly balanced. Once it did not cause any steering wheel vibes I would move that tire to the rear. I know this sounds very odd...but I guess a 255/65 tire on the disco is sensitive to being balanced perfectly. For those that started with properly balanced tires this seems nuts....but I have been amazed at how sensitve my truck is to running with a tire even the slighest bit out of balance. I also have a jeep which I use for wheeling and know full well just a small amount of mud on the inside of the rim after playing in the mud will make the 31X10.5 I have on it shake....so I shouldn't be surprised what would happen to a wheel on a 5000lb truck that was off balance even slightly. Goood luck....am interesed to see what u turn up. Hope your get it resolved...it drove me crazy |

Bryan, I have a'96 with currently only 60k miles that has had the same problem for 2 years, but at 70mph...only seems to have happened since fitment of a set of (otherwise great) Michelins. Don't really know what it is either, tire dealer figures it's alignment problem (it's not, that's OK) or some other similar feeble excuse...I thought perhaps maybe it was stiffer tire design on the LTX, but I see you have Pirellis.... I've checked all joints/bearings..blah, blah, blah... Incidentally, I have another almost identical (except for the multiple dings and gouges)'96 Disco thats well over 113k miles, is the daily "hack" and is in no way as well pampered as the "rumbly one", it has a mixture of not well balanced cheapie Goodyears at mixed up pressures, and some off brand tires that have scalloping from previous misalignment...this truck runs dead quiet!! ('cept for a little tire howl outside)...no such rumbles! ANYONE?...and ideas for us? |
