Looking for advice on which Roof Rack to purchase. Of course, I would like the best bang for the buck. Is the one from British Atlantic any good? Any other suggstions are welcome.

Thanks,
Tom

Best Bang For Your Buck is a highly subjective thing.

Personally speaking, I would not have been totally happy with anything but the Safety Devices/LRNA Adventure Rack because I like the way it looks on a Disco. There are some shortcomings to the rack but I'm still happy in spite of those. It wasn't the cheapest priced rack at $900 either.

But if I had bought a $500 rack from somewhere else, I would not be totally happy because it isn't what I wanted.

So, the best bang for your buck is what makes you most happy.

Jay, that's the common "factory" roofrack.

Safety Devices "Highlander" roof rack, also known as the LRNA "Adventure" roofrack

Scroll about half way down the page.

How much did the rack cost?

Tom,

I do like the styling of the Adventure Rack for the Discos, but it is almost impossible to get them at a decent price LRNA has an exclusive with Safety Devices for USA import of those. You can call and order a rack from a Safety Devices or another UK vendor but the shipping will be close to the cost of the rack itself.

EBay always has Used ones if you can find one for around 500 its a good buy if in your area. Most are going for 800 and above and are on the opsite coast you are located

But for a production made Rack the ARB is hard to beat it has a solid basket construction mesh floor and a decent fit and finish. it is freeway quiet. And the Mount hardware is really engineered well.

I have seen a few decent one off's made but I don't like the square tubing used by local fabricators and most end up looking like contractor or plumber racks, to each his own there.

So as not to be accused of "Shameless Hawking my Wares this is a personal opinion I own a ARB. and have owned several other racks to compare with. This is not a SALES PITCH. Got to love those Aussies for making some good products..

A full lenght ARB w mounts will probably run about as much as factory rack. Nice as hell though (the ARB).

Mud Man

That could be true but it depends where and how you shop for them.

Also a big factor is a built in floor on the ARB.

The Adventure Rack nice as it is does not have a floor.

Add the cost for most of the popular materials used and labor and your well above an ARB rack.

I wish ARB made a ladder to match the rack..

the rack for the buck?

easy!

the full length arb with mesh floor.
very few in country.

strong as all hell and it mounts to the
gutter alot nicer than the sd rack.

the genuine rack looks cool - but is noisey
sucks gas mileage (the arb has a built in
aero pan and is quiet up to about 75mph)

no question the arb is the best rack out
there PERIOD - even if it is less than
the genuine....

IMHO!!

what about the wilderness rack from AB

Annon,

The Wilderness from AB is an entry level rack system... I have no real opinions on it, but based on looks and design, it is a light to medium rack system. I would not sit in my beach chairs up there and do the tailgating thing. Also no real floor just a rail kit I believe.

Dont have rack envy. If a Wilderness rack will suit your needs go for it. I started out with a CON FER and Plywood base it worked fine on my 88 RR for years.

The ARBs and Adventure racks are the higher end manufactured rack systems. There are some awesome metal fabricators out there that could duplicate them 100% but you will end up paying considerably more for a custom rack

If I were to do a custom rack I would do a full Camel style bolted to an interior roll cage. Some big bucks there.

And Jon, Yes I do

Or you can make up one yourself, for instance similar to the Hannibal one, if you have any possibility of bending and/or welding aluminium.
Making your construction that way, you can spred the forces evenly along the whole gutter.

the wilderness rack by garvin can be bought with a flooring. the only way to buy it in my opinion. true it is not as strong as the safety devises rack, but then again most of us really don't use those racks for their intended uses. i would love to have one of those racks......don't get me wrong. and you can get a few, if not more, people up on the garvin rack. i weigh 200 lbs. and i had a few others up there with me last football season. not an issue. i am adding 1/8" diamond plate on top of the flooring to create a smooth surface for sleeping, drinking, etc.
also very quiet in my opinion. quieter than my dads jeep with the standard thule rack.
i got what i could afford at the time. no regrets.

Can you still use the sunroofs with the ARB Rack on a Disco II?

If you decide on the ARB, Steve Miller can get you a great price on them. He gave me a smoking deal on the full length rack and legs. Not to mention the awesome pricing on IPF lights.

I must say I have seen most of the racks mentioned above and am unimpressed.

I went with a Brownchurch of London. This is an overlander company that makes nothing but racks and related items for Land Rover UK. I paid $650 for a full length vinyl coated (way stronger than paint) rack that works with my two sunroofs. I think it's the strongest of the gutter mounted racks. I drove from Nevada through the Sierra to the Bay Area with 400 pounds on top. I am not saying that was smart from a handling standpoint but the rack had no problems. Rovers North is the distributor for Brownchurch.

Mike,

Is your disco series I or II. Does the rack have a floor?

Thanks,
Tom

I have a D1 (Mike D1), the rack has bars at about 6". I went with plywood. I think you can get one for the DII too.

tom -

the legs on the arb are height adjustable - yes you can use the rear roof on a d1 atleast on max hi setting - should carry over to a d2

i had a wilderness rack on my cherokee - it was a nice rack, once assembled, but you were in constant danger of your feet slipping between the bars when wet. also the rack is somewhat crude and defintately ate gas and made noise! the mounting system definately was a little soviet - bit it did work. a good rack - not a great one. (sorry gp!)

nadim- the 73" x 49" (1850mm x 1250mm) weighs about 120 lbs (54 kilos)

the rack is finished in a dark grey metallic powder coat. very nice.

dee and ron - thanks for the votes of confidence!

Steve,
I measured the roof on my D1 - right at 87" from the rear end of the gutter to the front edge of the gutter. So, it looks like the 87" ARB is actually a good fit. It might be a little long, but it will fit. I am really curious to see what one might look like. Has anyone ever seen one on? Any pics?

Not trying to detract from Steve's sales of ARB racks....

But...

If you're interested in Safety Devices' roofracks.... David at the Thatched Roof Garage is going to start carrying Safety Devices.

FWIW....
