If this was a quote for pads and rotors, I'd say it was a fair deal if you aren't willing to do it yourself. If this was simply for pads, then you are getting bent over.

If your dealer is anything like mine that does not include roters. $500 is not bad for a dealer. mine wanted $750. I called every brake shop within 20 miles of my house and the best I found was about $500. That being said DON'T pay it. You can do all four brakes yourself for about $100-$150. Even if you don't consider yourself a mechanic brakes are very easy. Just pull the tire off and start tak'in stuff apart.
Actually there are some good write up's in the tech section. But bottom line you can do it yourself.

Pete,

Check this link out:

That's a great write up for changing the pads. Word from experience: Use Genuine Parts. I bought pads from a different manufacturer and they ended up squealing very loud. As soon as they were replaced with LR Brake Parts, the noise stopped.

Ferodo (sp?) is the OEM supplier and I can say the pads look the same and work just as well as Genuine LR pads. I didn't compare cost but they should be a little cheaper.

Checked out the Ferodo site. What part number did you come up with?
Someone have a URL for LR OEM brake pads.
LR Disco II pads are SFP100480 (front) and SFP100490 (rear).
Great artical on the Disco2 brakes.
Orlando LR charges 200 for the front and another 200 for the rear. Brake pads only.

shit.....a grand for pads and brakes. shit if i had to pay that kinda $$ on my rig i would be sucking dicks for a living. sorry, but homey don't play that game.
i just ordered those tiny little plastic clips that hold the back panel on the rear door.....$1.15 a piece (need 20 of them). and LR is paying some mexicans 3 cents for them i am sure.
i know.....most car companies do this shit, but it just seems i picked the one that like to really shove it up my keester!!!
cost me $65 and 45 min of my time to do my pads (front and rear) on my D1. $500.....that's a fucking joke man. do it yourself or head to sears. these trucks ain't anything special.

Fucking trucks i am starting to get really pissed off with Land Rover. What the fuck, they said to me "well its a really heavy truck so the pads will be expensive." Fuck that, man my uncle's F-350 is a whole lot heavy than a LR and he pays only 135 for pads and he can just drive over a Land Rover and crush it with his plow. lol

Damn Garrett - tell me how you really feel :)

LOL

FYI - I just did all 4 rotors with the DBA slotted/crossdrilled - new oil seals, Mintex pads, new lock tabs, etc etc for a total of $384.00 (DAP) and it would have been much, much cheaper without the slotted/crossdrilled rotors.

yeah i know. i went a little wack-o there for a second. i mean i like our 'local' (1.5 hours away) dealer and all and they are not always to blame. LR in general i guess. but some of the shit that comes out of there mouth is just funny. maybe they think the short bus stops at their dealer every day, but i don't always buy the shit they feed me.
it's not like all the OEM or genuine parts LR sells is anything special. in many cases the stuff we have on our trucks is not on par with some other car makers. and to say that you have to use this or that just blows my mind. and many times we buy into this shit and pay out the ass for it. like O2 sensors, pads, rotors, etc. nothing magical about these items. it's a basic truck....not some fancy smancy exotic. and like people have said in the past.....you DON'T have to go to the dealer. even if you are under warranty. do it yourself or take it somewhere where you won't get bent over. unless you like that kinda thing. :)

I just changed pads and the rear rotors by roverland for 650. Dealer wanted 1000 for that. Also, the guy from roverland (forgot his name) said he can get the CDL installed on my D2 for 250 including the linkage. Is this a good deal?

Pete,
Your D2 brake job is a walk in the park. Its as easy as taking it up the sphincter (with or without lubrication)at the stealership. Got my crap (rotors from thepartsbin.com) and (pads from XK's Unlimited). It'll take maybe an hour to do with beer and/or 2 hours with big cigar in between the fronts and the rears. Also, don't even think of turning your rotors....I don't know which happens quicker...depreciation once you drove it off the lot or rotors below minimum spec.

Brakes. LR has quite a scam going. I had mine done at an independant shop at 38k miles, pads and rotors(genuine LR parts cost only $45 more for all 4 wheels)for $900. Looked into doing it in my garage...the rotor replace ain't no walk in the park Dorothy. The real curse is the rotors lasting only "30-something K" miles. Any body aware of an after market "American Style" (>K miles) version?

Buy the parts and do it yourself--it's pretty easy and doesn't take a lot of time.

Oh, I've been there-

Replace the pads yourself-I've got it down to 15 min. per axle-never let them go metal to metal and your rotors last quite a while (depending on the pads used). LR pads are some of the easiest to replace of any vehicle.

Whenever I order parts i try to order a dozen brake pad pins and clips so I always have plenty around. My secret for preventing squeal=I cut out a piece of Coke can slightly smaller than the backs of the pad and glue it to the back of the pad with JB Weld epoxy and let dry overnight-no squeal.

Where is a good source to order pads? Just bought my disco two weeks ago and it did not squel on the test drive... but it sure does now.

I had a recall on the ABS and when I bought my Disco II, the rotors were bad and they had to replace them for free at 3,000. Is there any correlation between between the rotten rotors and having to replace the brake pads?

Please let me know. I just got reamed for $500 for brake pads only and the rotors are brand new.

Thanks

Got a friend who is a mechanic at Land Rover - said the rotors should last 100K. My pads avg about 25K - stop and go traffic in Atlanta. I used Freodo pads and they sqeak a little now 11K later. My dealer wanted 450.00 just for the pads.
Total rip off. 1st time i ever did it - took me two hours - drinking beer and having to go to the store for a tool.

ssargele,

Your poor bastard, it appears in your second trip to the ******* you paid for it all and then some. By why of clarification, your rotors are not rotten, they are merely thin by design. The only correlation I can draw between the rotors and the pads is, when the pads are done so are your rotors.

I have 45,000 miles on the original rotors and pads on my 2000 DII. What I am hearing from you all is that I need new rotors (no turning). How hard is it to replace the rotors. The pads look easy but are there any hidden secrets to the rotor removal/install. Any opinions on British Atlantic complete brake kits? Thanks, Jim

Rotors are easy, as i recall 1 or 2 Phillips head positioning screws, and a few raps with the rubber mallet to get things started.
