I was doing a little surplus shopping last night, and found that Costco is now selling the Red and Blue top Optima batteries, and pretty cheap too, about $103 if i remember correctly.

If anyone in the Philly area wants one, let me know, and I'll pick it up for you.

THey also had BFG TKO's for about 105 a tire as well. I'll have to ask them what they want for the BFG muds.

Zak,

Optima's aside....Do they really sell 5 Gallons of Mayonaise in one container? :)

Jokingly,

Paul

Paul, I bought a "Thing" of shampoo at costco years ago and It's probably going to be a family heirloom! I can't believe the sizes of stuff there! But where else can you get a 55 gallon drum of soy sauce? I wonder if any New York stores are carrying Optimas. Gotta love Costco.

We bought a huge thing of trash bags almost two years ago, and still have about 1/4 left. I love that place for dry goods. Not package goods, so don't get to excited Paul :)

Zak,

So I guess they don't carry the Sam Adams Special 100 pack or vats of White Zin for the ladies....

John (jroc) bought a package of hotdogs there for our Maine trip about 6 months ago and I think he's still having them for dinner every night....

I love Costco. When my wife and I got married our reception was in a place were we were not allowed to have a keg. Bottled beer only so... Costco here I come. It took three of us to load our cart and push it to the front(one of those big flat ones). We ended up with literally 3/4 of a pallet worth of beer (Red Hook and Pyramid).

I don't know what was better. That fact that I ran into my new boss on the way out pushing this cart'o'beer ("Yea, I'm having a few friends over to my place for the game.") or that the only transportation we had was my friends early 70's VW Camper bus that was painted like a cow. With the bus loaded the beer was stacked up to the windows. I rode in back with my legs propped up on top. The cop that passed us later gave us a really strange look (Hmm... three guys, 3/4 a pallet of beer, and a 70 hp VW Bus...).

Glenn, I don't have them EVERY night! But yeah I still have hotdogs left, and by my calculations I should be finished with them right around when my social security kicks in. Then, judging by how my 401 is doing, It'll be nothing but catfood and saltines. And if it gets any worse I won't be able to afford the saltines!!!

Everyone: Invest in the stock market, Buy American, and about this East Coast Trip, make it New York! I have a few political contacts and I'm sure we could get a run or two in in Central Park before they kicked us out! Plenty of "Extreme" terrain and if we time it right we can catch a free concert on the Great Lawn! And wild life? The West Coast may have Bobcats and Rattlesnakes but we've got New York Rats. These Rats could turn your Bobcats into Bitchcats and Rattlesnakes into accessories before you can say forgetaboutit! And lastly, Ho, no need to lug around all the cooking gear we've got dirty water dogs and shit-ka-bobs! Tempted yet??? Think about it! New York, one of a kind!!!

where are you from Michael??? I've never met anyone outside of Louisiana who knew what the hell Zapps chips were. In case you don't know they will ship chips to you anywhere in the US.

And for the rest of you guys, how far away do they sell Abita now??? I thought it was still just a local thing but was very pleasantly suprised to see it at the liquor store after I moved up to Arkansas and can't imagine all of you guys being in the south given the general lack of Rovers down here.

Men,

Back to Batteries......

Now, how well do the Optima's work as far as form, fit and function? I am still running the original Battery on my '00 D2. But, this week I am installing 4 Hella 4K's and a Hella Back-up light.

If my numbers are correct, I am looking at a total Amperage draw of 42.36 Amps:

2 Hella Cornering @ 100w/12vdc= 8.3*2= 16.6a
2 Hella Euro @ 100w/12vdc= 8.3*2= 16.6a
1 Dual 55 Work Lt @ 55w /12vdc= 4.58*2= 9.16a

Now the total amperage will be broken down and drawn from 3 relays, 1 for each light group. The part I do not understand is after the relays, how much is power is being drawn from the battery? And if I upgrade to an Optima, which one?

Carter,

Greg and I can purchase the Dog on draft in Philly. In fact, there are several New Orleans themed resturants here that serve it as well.

one of the main benefits to optimas is that they do not use a tradition battery acid. the way some of us drive off road can break or crack a traditional battery and then leave you helplessly hooking a ride with some local. the optimas contain a 'jelly' like material that holds its form and integrity if broken, shot or molested. they are not prone to breaking from all the rocking and rolling that is happening from harsh off roading.
well this is what i was told from some yocal and it seems somewhat logical.
i would not think that you necessarily NEED one paul. personally i would rather go for the dual battery setup. optimas can still go dead and leave you stranded. that becomes harder to do with 2 batteries.

hey carter...!

i live in dallas, but did some time at loyola law school before deciding law was not my deal...and i have an uncle in pearl river. you gotta love crawtaters...! about the only chip with enough flavor to cut through a turbodog! i left new orleans in '89 and spent a few years pestering local spots to carry abita products and zaps chips. ahhhhh. the power of pestering!

Garrett,
Your yokal fed you bull. Optimas are not gel batteries. They contain flet like material soaked in the electrolite and this shit is wrapped around the lead plates. This makes them better than gel baterries because there's no gel to leak out if the battery gets punctured. The wrapping of lead plate also prevent it from being broken off by vibration and having the "felt" wraopped with it, means you can put a hole through the whole thing and the plates won't touch each other and short out.

As to which to get. I've always suggested the Yellow or Blue top ones because they're deep cycle. Truth is the Red Top will serve you just as well and does have more cranking power. The DC batteries seem weaker now than their older ancestors. I would spring for Exide Orbital DC. Light blue top. Same technology, more power, less $$. Or just get the Red Top from Costco for cheap and don't worry about it.

I saw a Blue Top at Pep boys yesterday. They had two of them, and one listed 650cca and the other listed 550cca.

Same with red tops. some at 950cca and some at 850cca.

What gives with that?

Yeah. I'm not sure about now but it used to be that the Red Tops were 850cca and the Blue (???mca) and Yellow Tops were 750cca. Since the Blue and Yellow Top are identical internally, I liked them for their stud mounts better but they were more money.

These days, all we can get here are 750cca Red Tops and 550cca Yellow Tops. 550 aint enough for the winters here.

The reserve capacity went down as well but I don't know what it is or what it used to be anymore.

Given the choices you listed, I'd go for the 950 cca Red Top.

If you live in a warm climate the yellow Top 650cca should do nicely as a winch battery as well but then I'd try to find the Exide Orbital DC with 750 cca and 120 or 140 min capacity.
