Looking for info on carrier bearing shim procedure. In adding a lift to my leaf sprung F250 4x4 pickup I've got some rear drive shaft "chatter" (shudder, hopping at acceleration from 0 to about 5 mph then disappears) and am told I need to shim the carrier bearing to line it up better to rid myself of the vibration. Can this same procedure translate to a Rover rear diff or front diff?

Anyone elabortate?

TIA

not the carrier bearing shim...carrier bearing shims set side to side location of the carrier/diff/locker that the ring gear is bolted to.

what you are talking about is spring shims that are little wedges that adjust the pinion angle up and down to make the drive and driven flanges parrelel.

but what i would most likely think you are feeling is what ford never seams to have a answer for ...diff chatter...the factory limited slip really makes a ruckus when you get on it.

the real problem comes in when you start to look at upgrade for the axle.

do you have the Dana or the sterling?

the sterling has a very limited number of lockers you can get

WILL,

4 inch leafs front and 6" block in rear. Makes a nice setup. Bed height right at 38 3/4 inches high. I run 285 75 r16 BFG AT's and it looks and runs sweet.

Musky, thanks for the info. Im not setting up a locker, just stock f250 diff carrier and R/P. But to get rid of the chatter, that's my quest.

well thats my point, if you have a stock ford LSD in the back it may be Diff chatter you are feeling.

and the way to get rid of it is with a different style carrier/locker

Makes sense. What about spring shims? Just don't want to wear out the LSD or the ujoints prematurely...

Thanks

If that is what it is the add the friction modifier to it...

if you bought a complete kit you should not need to hunt down shims, they have those simple 4" kits pretty worked out.

just get a $10 magnetic angle finder at the hardware store and snap it on the transfercase output and the pinion flanges and make sure they are at a common angle for the stock single cardin shaft they have.

Kyle has a point with the frition modifier, but if it is under warrenty let the dealer do it. if they see a different color fluid come out they may be prickly about it.

I know a guy with the V10 and he has had good results from the GM LSD fluid additive and unless he really lugs the truck down with tools and bricks and shit it nolonger chatters.

over size tires are said to make the problem way worse

Damn - why have I never had this rear diff prob? I'm on my 4th Ford F250/F350 since '90 - all with LSD rear and never had chatter once - loaded or empty......course I've never lifted them either - just slightly larger tires.

how heavy do you run and how hard do you drive yours?

the contractors that lug them down/overload them and drive aggresivly have it all the time.

also as I said above oversized tires seam to bring it out.

then again you may not think the chatter is an issue, my one neighbors truck chatters so bad you cant believe but but he has a huge load exhaust and says what? I dont hear anything?

5K lbs in the bed is not uncommon for me and then on top of that it's pulling that load in and out of all kinds of shit - like 800 ft deep quarries.

My tire size is slightly uprated, but nothing huge.

Not arguing the point BTW - it's just that my Fords have really never given me a days trouble excpet for one auto trans at 120K, one set of POS autohubs and never a diff problem. Usually if something bad happens to a vehicle - it happens to me! We've also got quite a few in the company and I've haven't heard of any diff problems.

I do take good care of all of them though - nothing goes unfixed or unchanged.

Current F350 4WD V10 is the best one so far - all I've done is put gas in and change oil.

Pretty sure it is the drive shaft angle. I'm having shims fabbed out of some 1/4" thick 2" wide and 7.5" long to stack under the carrier bearing attached to the frame. Seems to be a common problem when lifting 4 to 6" from stock. I have learned a great deal from ford-diesel.com and pirate4x4.com's Ford bulletin board. Thanks for the input on the lsd friction reducer.
