Alright, here's the deal. I was driving back from class today, and I'm pulling into my apartment complex, and I have to slam the brakes cause this girl nearly backed out into me. Now while I'm sitting, waiting for her to get out of my way, I notice this really strong burning smell coming from the air vents. It didn't smell like oil or transmission, but yet and still it startled the hell out of me. I pull in and cut the car off, go and open the hood. Nothing there out of the ordinary, nothing burning, I can't even find the smell anywhere in the engine bay. Nothing out of the exhaust either. I cut the car back on and cut the air on, and I can still kind of smell the smell, but not as strong. Can anybody tell me what the hell is going on? Oh, the A/C was not on, it was just the vent.

Diff fluid leaking onto the brakes maybe.

Check the inside of each tire or the swivel balls to see if it's leaking.

Might also be the break pads. Almost a metalic smell to it. As the pads wear, sometimes, when you hit them hard, they will smell a bit......follow a tractor trailer to a toll booth, and you'll see what I mean...

As indicated by the previous posts, the smell is probably not related to your air vent system. Chances are the smell came from outside or under your vehicle.

Did is smell like burned rubber? You can still get that burnt rubber smell with ABS under certain conditions.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Thanks guys, i appreciate the advice...it had almost a metallic smell to it, so i'm pretty sure it was probably just the brake pads. it hasn't made the smell anymore, so I ain't gonna worry about it. It's amazing that as many times as it's coughed, squealed, popped, clanked, rumbled, sputtered and shimmied, that a burnt smell in the air system would weird me out. Hell, at least it wasn't somebody's cat.
