Here's the latest from LRNA: Subject: Discovery 2003 MY-Transfer Box Diff Lock The purpose of this bulletin is to clarify the availability of transfer box diff lock on the 2003 MY Discovery. 1. Diff Lock will not be available for US or Canadian spec 2003 MY Discoverys. 2. Following a recent running change, all 2003 MY Discoverys are being built with a universal transfer box instruction label that mentions diff lock. Understandably, this is misleading to Retailers and customers. Please do not remove this label at this time. Alternatively, it is recommended at the present time that you explain to owners at delivery that this feature is not specified on their vehicle. Presently, the factory is making plans to re-introduce the old label that makes no mention of diff lock. Furthermore, as you may already have noticed, the 2003 MY Owners' Manual mentions diff lock on page 151. Please note that it is asterisked, and, therefore, is qualified as "an option or only fitted to some vehicles in the range". As stated above, diff lock is not available for the 2003 MY Discovery. A separate bulletin will address our diff-lock strategy at a later date. |

So the H2, the Jeep TJ Rubincon and G500 all have 3 locking diffs. And the Best 4x4xfar has offers 3 vehicles, not one of them have a single locking or even viscous differential. I won't even get into the lack of floating axles on the D2. |

Well, Maybe that Defender will come back? Maybe they'll leave a locking center on that one. Or maybe they'll screw it up and we'll all be looking for something else to buy. The Land Cruiser also has three locking diffs and has since 1996. Just found that out today. Yes, I know its a Toyota. -P |

The only reason I wouldn't look into the LC is because of the IFS. Okay... two reasons... it's just a little to big for the wheeling I like to do. |

One more reason not to trade up from my '98. I was waiting for confirmation if the '03's after August would contain CDL. Seeing their not, no reason to buy new. Though my sister said she would trade her transfer case out of her early '99 disco II if I wanted it!!!! Mike |

Al, The H2 and Jeeps have no center diffs, so 2 locking diffs are all that's needed. I.e. less POS than new Rovers. |

I always though that D2 has floating axles, it says so too in the brochure I got from the dealer. Did I miss something here? |

Yup, at least Jeep has the right idea for one of their vehicles. I'm getting the feeling that land rover doesn't care about wheeling anymore they just care about yuppies buying their CARS. |

Simon, you could call it a full floating axle with sealed press fit bearings. So unlike earlier Rovers where if you break an axle it's just a matter of keeping a few tools and a tube of silicone in your gear. In a D2 you now have to remove the entire hub and remove the part that's broke and keep the broken stub on the hub and hope the press fit bearings hold up until you get home or your wheel will fall off. And depending on where you break you might just be out of luck since there's nothing holding your wheel anymore. But the weight is supported by two bearings on each wheel and not by the axle so yes... it is a full float. And if you want to remove the rest of the alxe from the hub you have a stake nut torqued to 360 lb/ft on the D2! Try fixing that on the trail. I won't even go into replacing the bearings or having a boot on the CV. The D2's axles are looking more like Jeep axles but they seem to hold up much better. One step forward and two steps back. |

Eric, I think it's interesting that two of the best off road vehicles sold in the US today are the Rubicon TJ and the G500. Both DC products. The Discovery is also a very good vehicle (with the CDL) but I don't like the direction Land Rover and LRNA is going. |

CDL is only a 1/4 turn of the wrench on any 03 disco. Ron |

even the new 4runner has a CDL..and traction control.. and hill decent control. ( and a V8) hmm.. why can toyota put it all together in one package but Land Rover cant? or wont? I guess the north Americans cant be trusted with to much "traction enhancing" technology. |

Ron, "CDL is only a 1/4 turn of the wrench on any 03 disco." Are you saying that they are using a transfer case with the CDL plate and bolt sticking out of it similar to the early DII and DI's? That is cool if they are because then adding a kit would be easy. Have you actually been under one and seen it? |

Thank you Al for the information - now I know what kind of "floating axles" D2 has! So, are there any Hub kits will fit D2's axles to improve its serviceability? |
