I am going to be replacing my power steering pump on my 95' Disco. Any precautions or suggestions from anyone on this?

The Story:

I was driving down I-95, with the cruise control set at 80 MPH. I started to notice the the engine was missing and the cruise had gone to full throttle, but was still barely making 75 MPH.

My first thought was the Fuel Pump. I pulled off at Daytona Beach and stopped to pop the hood. While leaving the highway, I noticed the power steering wasn't assisting much in the turns.

Upon stopping, I immediatly heard a noise from the engine which sounded like it had converted itself to a Diesel. My next thought was that I had thrown a rod.

I opened the hood and immediatly saw that the power steering pump had died (Horribly) and had sprayed Power Steering fluid all over the engine compartment, including the distributor, which was the culprit in the power loss.

I had a friend come get me and we towed the vehicle the rest of the way home. I did a check of the Internet and got several prices on replacement pumps, listed here.

www.thepartsbin.com (new) $415
www.Rovercannible.com (used) $250
www.britishrecycling.com (used) $150
www.roverconnection.com (aftermarket) $425
www.rovercity.com (rebuilt) $275

Add shipping to all of these and possible core charges and you see it can be expensive.

I'm going with Stephen at Rovercity.com because he is located here in Florida, within driving distance, so I can save a little on shiopping and possible get some free technical advice.

Hope this is usefull to somebody else down the road.

Mike,

Can we not upgrade our already weak factory unit? I mean, if you are to pay 275$ for the same weak unit, I personally would pay a bit more for a better pump, that can handle the pressure (no pun), and that maybe can help me install a hydrolic steering assist?

Io?

Not sure. But I will search the web. Gimme a day or so, and I'll get back to you with a site or so. Will try to beat 275$.

Anyone?

Nadim:
Sounds like a plan, I can't do anything until Monday anyway, And I'm always up for something bigger and better!

After you mentioned it, I went and did a couple of searches but haven't found anything yet.

Bryan:

Europarts and Rover City are the same people. Stephen has come out on a couple of rides with us and seems like a pretty good guy. He has several project vehicles that he is working on and has a good deal of knowledge.

Why not check out Mile Marker winch site, I think they have an upgraded pump for their winches?

Saginaw Pumps:

they might have something?

Ok, Checked Mile Marker... Nothing there.

Went to the Saganaw Site. Could be something there, But I couldn't cross it over to anything.

Still open to suggestions though!

Saginaw would be my first choice. You may have to get a little creative on the hose fittings and bracketry, but well worth the effort. Make sure the pressure and flow ratings are similar!

OK...Also, AGR: www.agrperformance.com

I think the best thing is to call them up (would have done so myself, but being in Saudi is kinda tough...)

Might be a good idea to cross reference our LR pump to a NAPA / US pump serial nu,mber, then we might find a Saginaw / AGR one that would fit, initially for a Ford, Chevy, Buick (???), Dodge...no?

I am still looking for that site that has it all...hehehe...goodluck to all...may the force be with us!

I'd love to find a different pump as well. I've had my ps pump replaced twice already, and the thing only has 38K on it. Luckly it's still under warrenty, but pisses me off that the stupid thing keeps braking. Let us know if you find anything!!!

I have rebuilt mine twice already, and after seeing the insides, I was not too impressed...

If we do manage to secure a performance pump, that will allow for a Hydraulic steering ram system, I'll go for it all. Turning 35"s in the future is not a good idea!

I'm still searching, will inform you all...

Meridian sounds like the best price so far, It saves me $50 over the "local" price.

I have one of Meridian's steering boxes and was happy with the service I got from them before.
