1. Is Haynes the best manual to get for DIY fixes on a Disco? If not, what is best manual? 2. Purolator or K&N Air/Oil filter? Which are better? There is a major price difference between the two. 3. Are there any special LR tools that I need to perform basic tune-ups on my 99 Disco? Thanks in advance |

IMHO 1. The genuine manual is the only one worth having. 2. Purolator is fine. I don't suggest K&N. 3. I'd suggest getting an OBD-II scantool, if you're wanting to get serious. Most everything else is regular tools for the most part... Again, IMHO, YMMV.... -L |

How much does that tool cost Leslie? What is the difference between that and the LR test book? Thanks, JMcD |

IMHO? YMMV? Yeah, I'm wondering what the scantool is and how much it costs? What's it used for? |

in my honest opinion your mileage may vary, ie: What works for me may not work for you. JMcD |

Hey JMcD and Kristopher, An odb II scan tool is used to scan codes from your OBDII computer that is put in all cars made between '96 and current. The port for your OBD hookup should be within three feet from the driver. On your Discovery it should be at about where your knees are when sitting in the drivers seat. If you go to your local parts store they will most likely have a reader for about $150 or you can get a custom cable and some software and hook it up to your laptop. Check out http://www.obd-2.com they have a bit of information on a software package. There is alot of information that you can get from your OBD port ei trouble codes sensor data and you can clear those pesky trouble codes after you fix the problem ;) Jeremy Katka |

Jeremy has ya covered regarding OBD-II... There are other readers out there, too, but the link he gave you is the one that I would look at first.

Thanks Jeremy and Leslie for the info.. I have seen the port when I was clearing some codes a while ago at my mechanics, but he was using the testbook. I am pretty sure that was not a $150.00 unit, though I could be wrong.... What is the difference between them? Thanks again, JMcD |

The $120 unit is basically an adapter that lets you hook a laptop to your computer to see the codes. The genuine "Testbook" is a dealer-only system, something around $2000, that integrates the computer and adaptor into one. There are other ones out there: some use a Palm Pilot, others are simple code readers that can't clear them or provide a lot of the additional data that you can get on a laptop. -L |

Testbook is actaully about $18K ! A friend just bought the version advertised in LRO and such - does all the stuff the LR supplied testbook does. He does it for a living and even then it will take some time to recoup that investment. Bill |

For me, the laptop and software sounds like the best way to go. Anyone actually doing this now? As always, Thanks for the great info and feedback. |

Equus makes a great OBD-II reader which they promote on www.codereader.com -- goes for $135 at jeepersandcreepers.com. It has all the features of the more expensive ones. It links to computer or PDA as well. I've had it for a few months and like it. I will agree that the genuine manual is the best. I've seen it for as low as $79.95, but most sell it for $119. |
