1997 Disco. I have been having a problem for a while now, and I can't seem to find a solution. Some times the problem is there, and other times the truck runs fine, and there is NO check engine light! When the problem is present the engine idles rough, and there seems to be less power, when acceleratiing or just running steady on the highway the engine shutters lightly almost as if it is running out of gas. Just the other day a new symptom arose, when coming onto a highway at about 60mph or more (and accelerating) the engine bogs down completely for a few seconds, then works fine for a few seconds, and does this in incraments of about 2 or 3 seconds at a time. Eventually it passes, but still seems to run bad. I just replaced the fuel filter, and spark plugs, and everything looked clean as it should. Land Rover service has suggested the Road Speed Transducer, but again the check enging light has not come on, so they can't tell me anything for sure. Please help. Thanks |

sounds like sticky valves via carbon, and/or deposit builup. If under warranty, the dealer will rebuild heads for remedy. Ask them for a top-end cleaner that they use sometimes to clean the oil-bathed portion of the valves. I had the same experience, eccept that it felt more like one cyclinder was dropping out, irradicly, usually at high speeds, then it got worse, untill it did set off the warning light and the code set was for multiple miss-fires (because no cylindar pressure, hence the cyclinder dropping out feeling)....just a thought |

BJ, I just went through this frustrating experience (see thread "Still stumped, need guru"). The difference in my problem was that my truck was always fine at idle. I didn't always have a check engine code either, but eventually (after 100-200 miles) it would throw a code. The first thing I would ask is if you have a buddy with a Disco 1 that you can use to help diagnose the problem. Most of the sensors you are going to want to swap into your truck are easy to get at and held in with only one or a couple of bolts (i.e. IAC, VSS, TPS, MAF etc.) This is how the dealer diagnosed my truck. You also want to follow all of the advise I was given and check your fuel pressure at the pump and at the rail, and check your coils and injectors. But with the problem being intermittent my money is on some sensor that is beginning to fail or has failed leading to the rough idle, loss of power and most likely an incorrect air/fuel mixture. Too bad you're not in Salt Lake City, because I would let you use my truck as I now have a bunch of new sensors and hardware and could help you figure it out. Have you ever noticed the oil-light blink on, but when you check the oil level, it's fine? If so, considering the other symptoms, might I suggest.... If you're so inclined, drop the oil pan, remove the oil pick-up tube, and make sure that the screen is clear. FWIW..... -L |
