Changed my oil in my DII the other day and noticed a strange dark orange gunk on the inside of the oil cap for the crankcase. Not a lot but just enough to make me wonder. Looks like rust but ......?????? Any ideas what the hell this could be?

A friend of mine had the same thing the other day on his D2. No clue what it could be, but I'm curious too.

I've got a D1, I noticed the same stuff at my last oil change. Is this perhaps carbon buildup? I would've thought that it would be black but who knows.. I did the engine flush to be protective, and I've got about 1k since that and haven't looked again. I'll check tonight..

Normal,

Change your oil more frequently and it will not happen.

yeah, mines always done it with Dino oil...I use synth. now, and no more, plus i change my oil just as regularly, so that likely got more to do with it than the Synth. the oil probably lasts a little longer but is changed at the same intervals.

My oil is changed every 3k, which has been once a month for the past 6 months. So frequency has nothing to do with it unless you're saying to change the oil every 1k.

I would agree with the frequency - I change mine every 3k or 3 months - only 33K and I bought it at 6K so no way it hasn't been changed frequently.

You haven't put any of those "miracle" fluids in have you? (ProLong, etc.)

Most of those contain a form of parafin wax (PFT) which can buildup and cause issues.

I'm assuming you haven't, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

i'd bet you a that it is a colorant that has persipitated out of the cap due to exposure to a solvent.

I'd say that if so there is no way it would ever effect anything

actually I did put some prolong in there for about 3k - what problems can this cause?

Moisture from condensation will cause a milky gunk to form at the coolest area (inside the cap) I've seen it look orangeish possibly from carbon sticking to the gunk? Do you run a lot of short hops, possibly not letting the engine heat up fully? Do you have a thermostat in it, or have poor heat, meaning the t-stat is stuck open, not allowing it to come up to full temp? Without getting completely up to temperature, moisture does not evaporate and condenses at the cooler spots. (insulated from metal, plastic cap) Quaker State motor oil is an excellent lubricant, but causes this to excess. A higher detergent oil will probably cure it or add a can of CD-2. Higher detergent won't harm anything.

Prolong, DuraLube, and other "miracle" oil additives that contain PTFT can build up in your engine.

Obviously, everything you read on the internet isn;t true, and I'm not a mechanic, but I've read too many horror stories about these products to ever put them in an engine I care about.

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/9909/prolong.htm

A quote from http://www.centuryperformance.com/engineoil.htm

"One marketer claims to have sold 15 million car owners on a theory that PTFE protects an engine against friction and wear. This is so ridiculous that even Dupont who makes PTFE and markets it under the Teflon® trade name will tell anyone that asks them not to use it in an internal combustion engine. In fact, Dupont was sued by one of these manufacturers so that they would not bad-mouth their own product!"

At best, they are snake oil, at worse, they will harm your engine.
