Mark, If you pop the hood, look on the passenger side (assuming a LHD vehicle), and locate the fuel rail that supplies fuel to the injectors (between the rocker cover and the plenum, on top of the engine block). There's a black cap that looks just like a tire-valve. Take the cap off and push the pin, just like you're letting air out of a tire. FWIW, it's not under THAT much pressure if the car has been sitting for awhile.... I've done it both ways, w/ and w/o depressurizing, and it made no noticable difference in changing the filter (amount of leakage, etc.) (it was a cold truck both times, though...) -L |

Mark, depressurizing your fuel will be the least of your worries. With 60k on the fuel filter, you should be ready for corroded filter threads. |

the easiest way is to pull the fuse for the fuel pump, start the truck and then let it run untill it stalls (only takes a few seconds). -Carter |

Mark, I did it the way Leslie said. I did it first thing in the morning, and just undid the fuel lines and had a rag handy to clean up the fuel that came out. The amount that came out was minimal, although enough to warrant not smoking while doing the install :-) But the biggest PITA for me was the bolt for the clamp holding the filter. Its position, and rust were the problem, but I probably could have helped things along by spraying it with penetrating lubricant the night before. All in all one of the easier DIY jobs on the Disco. Easier? Are you kidding? I did one on a Rangie and it took a couple of hours! If the fittings are rusted, you're looking at one hell of a pain in the ass. I know, some folks get them out right off the bat, but I have yet to encounter one! Cut the pipe and use hose barbs! Peace, Paul |

I'll second it being a pain in the ass. Took about an hour. However, after seeing the crap that was in there, I have no regrets about doing it. Might even do it every 30k or so from now on. |

If you do it often enough, you won't have a rust issue. I change mine every 30k or so, never had a problem. |

Axel, when I first got my disco, at 80k miles, the filter was totally rusted in there. I took it to a shop to get it off and they couldnt do it. Then I took it to the dealer, who happened to have a kit for replacing that section of fuel line (what a coincidence). It cost me $115 to get the filter replaced. I went to change the filter myself at 100k miles and guess what? Corroded again! This time I managed to get it off myself but it was a bitch. I am considering replacing this filter with one that has barbed ends. |
