Well, today in good ole' Amarillo TX we had a lot of rain. I was at school and left for lunch with 2 other people in my car. The streets were FLOODED...3-4ft of water. The streets were packed, so I couldnt turn around. Anyways I cautiously drove around finding low water, but am forced to drive through about 3 feet of water at some points. Along my way I see some stranded cars, so they wave me down and I stop in this 3 ft water to pick them up (they jumped through my rear windows). But when I stopped I was keeping a constant rev at 2800rpm so water won't get in my tailpipe. I made it through that and some other pretty nasty water crossings...where some jeeps were stalled. When I got back to school with about 8 people in my car from rescuing them there was smoke coming out the bottom of the car. I didn't pay much attention to it then, but when I got back in my car after school the oil light illuminated, and the engine made some strange sounds. On my way home I encountered some other 2 ft. water crossings. For a while my transmission had some hesitation when I first got off the clutch in first and second gears. But I am now at home. So, what should I check for? All the electronics seem to work. Do you think I got water inside the diffs and transmission? Or will this all dry up? I checked the oil and it seemed clean. The heat protection thing on the hood was drenched in water, and it actually unbuckled at the end. Your help is much appreciated. |

Mel: WOW! Good thing you got no oil in the engine-surprising as sometimes, the oil will come in around the crankshaft seals. Yes, pull the fill plugs on your diffs and swivel balls to check the oils, I use a pipe cleaner. But, given the amount of driving you did and the dpeth, you might as well just dump the diffs and swivels and refill to be on the safe side. Have you checked the fluid? If it stayed running, the electronics are probably OK. |

Well, I don't know about the engine, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that water has back filled into your diffs. tcase & transmission ... maybe that too. You should change your fluids (after LiLi!). Good luck, I hope nothing major croaked. Keep us posted! |

Mel, here is what I would check (in no particular order) 1) air box for trapped water and condition of filter 2) front and rear diff - check and change fluid. 3) check trans - check to see no water is trapped in bellhousing. Check fluid - change if necessary (probably a good idea) Otherwise - let electronics dry out and drive it until everything is nice and hot a dry underhood. Get ride of underhood insulation (personal pref only) Bill |

first thing i'd check is the engine dip stick...like right now the oil light can be an idicator of a engine milkshake! when oil and water mix it can become a milkshake real fast and the resultant slurry will plug the oil pickup screen causing a drop in oil pressure and a oil light . |

Not only will the things Musky referred to happen, but think about it, if there is water in your sump, where did it go in the sump? Oil floats, right? Sounds to me like the first thing your bearings would see would be water! Don't forget the swivels! |

If water gets drawn into diffs, tcases, sumps etc the overall fluid level rises. Follow that up with a bit of a drive and the pressure in the diff etc inceases. The water settles to the bottom of the diff etc so the oil is the first thing forced out through the seals ( sprayed on hot exhaust will make smoke ). This happened to my dads S1 Landy many years ago during a trip north in the floods. When he went to change the oils , all he found was H2O. |

Just to add another person telling you the same things... and some idle chatter. Change all fluid lubricants. Water(dirty flood water at that) in oil will quickly ruin bearings, bushings, etc. When my CJ5 was flooded in a flash flood (Fort Collins CO Jul 97), water was in everything. This was rushing whitewater, not standing water, and the CJ was stationary until the current moved it. And it doesn't really need to be said but I will anyway. Be careful with flash floods. 6 people died in this '97 flood, 160 died in the '76 Big T just southwest of here. A good friend owns a house where all the homes on the other side of the road were gone in the morning. He lives 150 feet from the Big T in Drake. Moving water is powerful. As the water was rising(it happened fast!) I tried to get to the jeep to move it to higher ground. By the time I was in water to my knees I could barely stand, I could feel my feet losing grip with the ground. It was stupid to even try as I was very close to falling and being swept 'downstream' before I even got close to the jeep. Funny part was this water line marker down the street from me. It went up to 7.5 feet. When we moved in years earlier I remarked how they must've had only a tall one left to put in there 'cause the top of the marker was above eye level while in a vehicle. I saw it top 6 feet that night... Ken |

Thanks for the responses. I knew that I had to replace the diff/transmission oil, but what kind should I use? I just had it replaced a couple of weeks ago for the 60K service. I plan on replacing the fluids this weekend because we are expecting another flood either today or tomorrow. Is it still safe to drive my Disco short distances? Also, I thought that the Discovery series 1 had breather tubes for the diffs and ? If not, where can I buy some? |

Ken, I'm glad to hear that you made it through that okay, I lived in Greeley for a while and I was in FT Collins that night that the flood hit in 97'. I was driving a ford escort at the time and I beat I got down to Loveland ASAP when it started to get really rough. I remember driving down college in a friends Ram pickup later that night and just trying to push through the "lakes" . I'm glad to hear that you didn't get swept away. justin |

just regular 90w in the diffs and transfer case. atf in the transmission. diffs do have breather hoses, but they don't go as high as they should. think they terminate just under the engine bay area? |

Ken, "Fort Collins CO Jul 97" I was living at CSU in Married student housing when we had that flood, my townhouse was about 50FT from the creek. Needless to say we had quite a bit of water that night. I remember looking out our bed room window and seeing people in Kayaks going down the street and soon after a geo metro. Crazy |
