Hi,

I have a dilema on my hands as I busted my front differential playing "Trophy Camel" guy. :lol
The diff broke and busted thru the housing cracking it wide open...

Anyways.. I got a line on a housing w/ diff from an earlier 3.9. My Disco is a 1997 with a 4.0. Can the earlier housing fit it without any mods. I'm just trying to get this back on the road.

If I wanted to pay dealer prices I would just get full lockers and upgraded driveshafts for that money. Maybe this will occur next year. Yeah!

Thanks,

You can just have it welded up

I thought the same but wouldn't this compromise the housing for any further offroad excursions? It would be a weak link (so to speak) How would it stand up to further rigorous conditions.

It extends across the whole bottom part.. Kinda like a smiling face.

A guy I queried about that before said that depending on the metal that the housing is could be hard or simple. HMMmmm..

Thanks

here some ideas, you can buy a replacement diff cover. There's a few companies in europe that make these just for your purpose. They are usually pretty cheap even with shipping. They look exactly like your front cover but are thicker steel. Another option would be to weld on a sewer cap and machine it for a plug. a couple of d90 guys do this and it's a cheap way to go while getting a thicker cover.

another option, although labor intensive. roversdownsouth has a complete front housing for only 250.

I checked it out .. They also have a diff that I need for an extra $500.

LRX.com has one complete unit including diff/housing but its from a 3.9. used...cheap.. that I'm really interested in.

Anybody know.. I've had the car sitting for a couple of weeks now so.. I'm itching to take off-roading again.. heheheh

i agree the diff housing is like a ford bango housing just keep welding the shit outa it. the big bubble it not where the strength comes from so patch it cover it and forget it.

also buy a new diff/LSD/Locker now when its apart is the right time. why would you spend money on something you plan to replace(used stock diff)?

Dee he really dont need all that drama. he gets two of your diff guards and just slaps em on after they weld up the split... They can use any kinda material to patch it...

Kewl... Consensus... Weld the fuck out of it and forgot about it.

Kinda like the overnight infomercial... oven cooker... SET IT and FORGET IT.

Nice.. Heheheh.

Muskyman... ahhh the age old question of doing work twice. I just want to get it on the road then use my "income tax" money to get the kewl stuff next year. Stocks ain't doing too good....

I used lots of JB weld and a few coins over the holes in my rear diff cover... worked great until I finally had it welded back by Midas - they did it for $50( cash under the table to the manager on a slow day) - I took it to them with the drive shaft and axles and diff pulled out and the housing nice and clean.. took them 1 hour..and they even put it all back together for me!

Kyle i was just kicking around the idea of a more solid diff replacement cover made with the same TLC the diff-guards are..
