I am curious to know if there are any real benefits of using a snorkel. The D2 air source originates inside the fender well through a open hole. Therefore the air box is more susceptible to water and debris contamination.

snorkel

And if there are any benefits; what about trail survivability? (aka damage from trees and crap)

Your opinions are valued.

Paul,
Good question. I was thinking about that myself. Did you see that volcano movie with Pierce Brosnan? Don't remember if it was Dante's Peak or the other one. Anyway, they had a Suburban swimming down a river with the snorkel. It was pretty cool.
I do believe the vent is supposed to face backward instead of allowing all of the splash to enter the pipe. Anyone disagree?

Simple answer to your thought - if it hooks something there's going to be a problem. It would look cool on a Volvo 850 though, eh?

Pat,

Yeah, I could imagine a snorkel equipped 850 in deep water making it happen. :)

I believe there is a sort of mesh on the inlet that dissipates the water (from rain, etc.) so it is correct to have it facing forward.

What good is a snorkel with a gas engine though ....really? Anyone know?
I only see a real advantage if you're running a deisel and aren't relying on electronic ignition components getting wet long before you immerse the air intake.
But it looks really cool :-)

i run a Safari Snorkle on my scout and its great!

I dunk my whole truck under water all the time and if you search this site I have talked about all the waterproffing I have done to allow me to go submarine.

as far as trail damage I have never seen a safari snorkle get mangled and I have gone as far as catching mine on trees and rolling the truck onto it.

they can take in alot of water before the pass it on due to the fact the floor of the plenum is below the air output on the snorkle

also I get a little better MPG on the highway with it facing forward then without it hooked up

I've heard that they increase MPG slightly as well.
Hell, that alone could be worth it!

Benefits of a snorkel on a gas engine:

1. Looks cool
2. Less chance of sucking in water and getting the MAF screen wet on watercrossings that approaches the wading limit of your truck without the snorkel
3. Looks cool
4. Cleaner air in dusty conditions
5. Looks cool
6. Ram air effect tripling your power at high (yeah right...) speeds
7. Looks cool
8. Great conversation piece at rest areas and toll booths. It's true!
9. Chicks dig it
10. And they look really cool.

Yeah, I was wondering about just how "waterproof" you can actually make a gasoline engine.

Musky, have you sealed up your Disco or just your Scout?

muskyman
Posted on Thursday, October 03, 2002 - 02:52 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

just the scout...and you can seal a gas motor plenty tight

the problem on a disco wouldent be the motor its self IMHO but all the rest of the stuff.

i'm not a big fan of moldy carpet and mildew in the leather seats

Or do it like the military. You seal the electrics, snorkle the intake and exhaust, vent the diffs/trans/bell/transfer to the intake snorkle. The engine, you...stop venting crankcase gases while under water. There are petcock style valves you turn for fording. The valves shut-off the venting of the crankcase so that it becomes pressurized, even to the point of blowing out past seals. Eh, the resulting leaks later may not be terribly desirable though. Plus the military *needs* to work on stuff to keep the constant flow of shop monkeys atleast somewhat trained, so just because they do it does not mean we want to.

muskyman, your Scout sounds like quite a runner. Do you frequent the BB at all?

Note: this is on the old stuff like MB, GPW, M38, M38A1, M151, M37, etc. I don't know about their current practices with the hummer.

It's a huge shaft with a bulb on the end protruding from your truck, hmmm let me think, why DO chicks dig it?

The only time I've seen or turned the Intake unit around is in serious snow. In rain, the unit is designed to dissipate water before it gets to the airbox.
I worry about snow just because it could clog...

my scout is lots of fun . its a dedicated trail/trip/hunting truck so I set it up to play.

I have been on the BB but I have disco web as a place to go babble , plus I'v been doing the IH thing for 25 years now so doing the disco thing is fun. anyways anyone that has had some seat time in a scout will agree that a disco is in alot of ways very scoutish.

I own a scout,I am setting it up for off-road, so I need a new daily driver, therefore I am looking for a used Series II. I've been doing the scout thing for about 15 years, and I like the aftermarket goodies for the disco, not much for the scout.

I used to run a Safari snorkel on my old (deceased) Jeep Wrangler. I lived in Seattle (lots and lots of rain) and always ran the scoop forward; I never had a problem with rain in the air intake. I also never had a problem with clearance when off road. There were defininte benefits: 1) raised air intake; 2) increased HP (well, seat of pants guess); 3) increased mileage by about 5 MPH; and 4) excellent conversation starter. Drawbacks: 1) some vibration at high speeds (ie: use liberal amounts of lock tight on the A pillar mounting points); and 2) the horror of cutting a 3" diameter hole in your sheet metal with a hole saw.

My Jeep saw plenty of deep water, but you will be limited mainly by placement of the Rover's on board computer, electronics, and door opening. Also remember to raise all your vent tubes and seal or raise and seal anything electric.

As far as girls digging it -- that seemed to proportionatley increase with distance from major cities (no offense to all the Rover gals in urban areas who like snorkels).

so there ya go another safari snorkle lover

like I have said over and over "i have yet to meet someone that owned one and did not like it and feel it gave them value

mark I agree with your waterproffing, with a disco the list never ends...thats what happens when you have stuff like rear AC/power windows...ect ect

Yeah, does 100" WB, boxed frame, 3.54 R/P sound familiar?

tight turning radius

v8 power

good balence between carry cap. and small size

over-built drivetrain for the size

very capable dead stock

most came auto but there are some stick gems in the rough

the similarities are there for sure, almost to the point that you cant ignor them.

it is known that toyota paterned the second generation landcruiser after the scout in many ways.

its really too bad that the banks wouldent back IH when they wanted to build the scoutIII.

4 doors ,kevlar body, diesel power,fulltime/partime transfer case,4 wheel disc brakes...hell who knows maybe this woulda been scoutweb

Muskyman, what is that snorkel from? I have the ARB/SS parts list in front of me and they don't list a scout though I imagine many would work..is that from a TJ? Also in the movie Dante's peak, I wonder who made that one as it's a Chevy/GMC and none are listed there either.
I know mantec makes one fro the Rovers but wonder if there are other manufacturers out there..

oh yeah check this out Safari Snorkel Video

The snorkle used in Dante's Peak is defintely a Safari snorkle. They do not have a Chevy GMC version (I know, I used to have a GMC Suburban). My guess is that it was fabbed from another vehicle version -- possibly the Land Cruiser. Remember that Dante's Peak was a Hollywood affair and the mock up only had to last for about 70-80 takes.

Timm lund at ARB/Safari snorkle sent me the cardboard die's for a bunch of the snorkles and I picked the FJ80 unit because it had the right windshield angle and also went far enough forward to clear the heater core.

the one in Dante peak was also intended for a toyota that suburban was all decked with ARB products that where adabted onto the suburban

he's been helping me out with stuff forever.

he is a perfect example of why buying ARB/Safari snorkle stuff is such a good idea, the quality of customer service they have as a company is way above and beyound what most companys do and Timm Lund has set a great example there as they have grown for years.

Hey, Toz.....

After watching you plunge a 3" hole saw into the fender of your XJ the other night, and the increased gas mileage you got over the weekend, I wonder if maybe I'm (gulp) getting used to the idea myself for the TARDIS. Of course, I should prolly be looking for 2" of lift and a set of non-stock GY HP tires first! LOL

Paul - on a D2 its so damn easy to go with a bit of speed through water and get the stuff into the MAF sensor. This cuts out the engine on purpose. So you stall; your truck starts seeping in mud and shit during the 10 minutes it takes to get pulled out. And your air filter, MAF sensor and exhaust are now fucked. So you get a tow home (Glenn?) or splutter home (Clarance x 3?) or just bugger around for hours with towels and engine starter (me).

That is, until the solid steel, brush-proof, rear-facing Mantec arrives....
