Now that we have had back to back hurricanes here in the New Orleans area and after visiting B.P.'s web site for info on a snorkel kit. They dont advise it be used for deep water with gas engines. I would love to hear any advice or experiances y'all have with Discos in deep water Thanks Tom |

I have a snorkel & was told not to let the water go higher then the top of my wheel. Brian |

Retardriot, Gas engines use a spark to combust the fuel but Diesel engines combust via pressure. A properly set up diesel engine can even run underwater. -Carter |

so even if i get a snorkel and a Mantek wading kit i cant have the engine underwater? |

it takes more then just getting air into a gas motor to let it run underwater. because the snorkle kits only "fix" the air intake issue and do nothing for the dozens of other issues you would need to deal with they put the dont go swimming disclaimer. |

Beat me to it. I have heard tell of and seen a few special vehicles with gas engines that could handle driving hood deep. From my understanding, it isn't easy, nor is it cheap. It is better to just swap in a diesel and voila. Will a TD5 fit a D1? Anybody tried this yet? |

The snorkel will alow you to go in a little deeper. Most stall issues are due to the engine ingesting water through the air box. However , the guys above are right. Most put it on to be safer about the water depths they are already crossing. Before I had my snorkel I was going into water over the hood , now I wouldnt go much deeper unless I had to but would feel safer doing what I had already been doing.. Kyle |

A big thing you deal with when doing a water crossing is the "surge" that comes back towards the truck after the initial "splash." The snorkel will keep that surge from getting sucked up inside the airbox (your EFI engine is nothing but a strong WET-Vac...). You also need to understand that the engine compartment doesn't immediately flood (lotsa guys in Aus actually will drape a tarp over the front of the vehicle to lengthen the time you have an air pocket under the hood). rj, and they are right to do so. the skid shield on my truck serves the same purpose. what the secret is to crossing deep water is to push in and push across, once the wake in front of you starts you need to continue to push it and follow in the shallower water you have created |

I had problems with running in water and then loosing half my power. I put a line of silicon/ dielectric grease around the dist. cap and some on the inside of the spark plug boots and sprayed coil and dist. etc with good silicon water proofing spray. Haven't had the power loss since. If you want you can disconnect the front fan and put a sheet infront of the radiator to keep water from getting sprayed by the fans and killing your spark. Someone please explain what to do if you think you did suck water into the engine.. do you just pull the plugs and turn it over to shoot out the water ??? |

Another issue with deep wading besides the act of getting air (and not water) to the engine is not flooding the electrics. At least with the D2 there are a lot of sensitive electronic components down by the passenger footwell. If these get soaked then its over. And unfortunately the snorkel ain't gonna help with this. Deep wading in a D2 will require alot of extra waterproofing of these parts.... -Harley |

The electronics are the same reason a snorkel won't allow a DI to operate underwater, if you fry the computers, you're stuck. If you have a factory CD player in a DI that'll be the first to go I've had my DI to the bottom of the doors and that was adventuresome enough, just about killed the engine from water ingestion, and thought I had killed an O2 sensor but the check engine light finally extinguished the next day after everything dried out. I suspect the air conditioning system in Discos doesn't like wading much either as it stopped working until it dried out as well. |

Lots of deep water in Florida swamps. I have done the following to address: 1) new door weather stripping, 2) di-electric grease everywhere, 3) Large front skid-plate helps, 4) all breathers extended into firewall. My next move is a snorkel. After a day in the swamps, all fluids checked, then followed by more frequent bearing repacking about 4-5/year. Ahhh yes, strong point about surfing the bow-wake. |
