Yes, Warn still makes hubs, though the ones that they made for Series Rovers have long been discontinued. I don't know if they have them suitable for a Discovery. However, they would be of marginal use in a Disco... you've got the aerodynamics of a brick, on a heavy vehicle... you're not going to improve the gas mileage by much if any... so why bother?

IMHO, FWIW....

Not turning the front end saves it from wear. Shaft u-joints/CVs, seals and bearings, diff bearings, front driveshaft u-joints, r&p, etc. That's why.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but free wheel hubs aren't really going to save you too much wear and tear without a part time T-case conversion. I think that the front drive shaft and front axles up to the spud shaft will still spin.

yeah but its not turning tires. Warn dont make hubs anymore for rovers?? I think you could get premiums for about 100$

Mark, you're right. I was just answering why one would want unlocking hubs. It's not the gas mileage but the wear savings with a part-time system. Should have made that clearer. On a Disco it would not make much sense unless you change the t-case as well.

well i mean if you lock the hubs it makes the wheels turn together with the axle....wouldn't this be an option just like the lockers...just a different approach...
sorry if i am not getting something...i don't know much about this area of the vehicle...thanks,
jess

I just got a set of Warn Premiums for my Trooper. My truck has the auto hubs which are less then reliable, are slipping in heavy terrain, and just plain suck. $145 shipped for the Warns. Install looks pretty simple, I'm doing it Sunday.

A couple extra MPG, less front-end wear, positive engagement and better durability. Plenty of reasons to do it on my old, part time 4WD Trooper ('89).

Not sure if there would be much benefit with a full time AWD setup like on the Disco though.

If I'm not mistaken, with the setup of the Disco I full time 4 wheel drive unlocking front hubs without converting to a part time t-case means the only way your vehicle will move is being towed as the power follows the path of least resistance. Without the center diff locked the front axle will spin and that's about it, the rear won't get any power. Not sure about the system on a DII, but from my understanding of the traction control system it employs the same should be true as it uses the brakes to force torque distribution. Depending upon where the sensors that detect wheel slip are mounted unlokcing front hubs could thoroughly confuse the traction computer.
