Does anyone have an opinion on Les Schwab tires? For those who've never heard of Schwab, it's a pretty large chain out in the Northwest. They've got a big sale on right now and I'm wondering if anybody has experience with them in offroad/snow situations. Thanks |

Just the Les Schwabe brand? I don't know. For heavy snow I used to use BFG MT's with the center lugs siped (by, I think, Les Schwabe) for traction on icy stuff. Of course, the free beef is hard to pass up. |

I ran a set of 31x10.50 AT-type Schwab tires on my old Scout II. As I recall, they were manufactured by Kelley--and they looked just like the Kelley Safari AWR. I've dealt with LS several times over the years since. Mostly, they have good service, back up their tires well, and have nice coverage for warranty service. Of course, they DO like to try and sell you a new battery every year and brakes whenever you come in for a tire rotation.....! |

Brian, I had some Schwab tires (siped mud and snows) on my 95 and they were great. Think they ran about $650 no tax in MT (slightly higer in WA or ID). |

Bryan -- what size did you buy. If that's the price for four, you might as well buy big name brands. I paid approx. $100/tire for 33x12.5x16.5 BFG MT's. Of course I waited for about 6 months until I saw them on super sale at Discout Tires. |

Oops, before you ask, the 33x12.5's were never on a Disco. |

Mark, Don't remember the size, they weren't huge, but it was 3 years ago. Siping costs a little more then you have the mounting, balancing and of course the used tire disposal fees (WAFJ). At the time I purchased mine, they were much cheaper than the BFG's, GY's and Mich. |

Just to clarify -- the $100/tire was the cost of the tire (mounting/balancing was extra). Siping was about $10-15/tire done a few years later. |

I can't recomend Schwab's tires. I was going to put Schwab's Open Country tires on the Disco, but because the tires on the Dakota wore out first I tried these tires on it first. I'm not a happy camper. They don't handle well at all. They break traction way to easily on wet roads and I won't put them on the Disco because my wife drive the Disco when I need the pick up. Schwab may have other tires which work better, but the ones advertised as the best don't work well for me. I'll probably go back to the store, but it will be Dunlops or Michlins for the Disco. Just my .02 worth. Steve |
