I suspect that the trans in my 1995 Disco is simply aging as it has a tendency to have some hard shifts and "thunk" into gear from park...but wondered about some recalls I had seen on driveline nuts etc on 1995 systems..wondering how I might find out if this impacted my car and or if it's even relevant to what I'm experincing...

also any ideas on the cost or rebuilding or replacing a trans should it be necessary....

thanks in advance

Sound like a worn trans output shaft. I was wondering if anyone knew which year they started cross drilling the output shaft to allow oil to lubricate the shaft.

I agree that it is the output shaft, my 95 does the same thing. I have not gotten around to it yet, but it looks like about 4 hours in labor plus the part from the shop I use. It sounds worse than it is. Has anyone had it blow? Good luck.

IMHO
tranmission thunks are "normal" hell I've had mine for 118k...
Start cheap, ever replaced the guibo (rubber donut thingy in front of the rear diff?
Other things to reduce the start up thunk.
When going into park, stop in neutral, apply e brake, allow vehicle to "settle" by taking foot off foot brake then move to park
When going from d to R or vica versa, pull out of D or R a moment before stopping, this removes the torque/stress on the drivetrain and minimizes thunking
Try this for a bit and get back to us

The "clonck" on my 94 disco was just a loose engine mount!
