Hello
Just a couple of questions for the experts of Discoweb. When I brake, my antilock cuts in. But I am on the paved road. Its really annoying, and not to mention dangerous. I think that its my speed sensor. Is there a way that I can turn the ABS off. Also, whats the best way to stop the brakes from sqeaking, they are not worn very much.
THANKS in advance
Sean

I was told by a Lexus tech. once that with the new composite (non asbsetos) brake pads, you can drive your rig in reverse for about a block or so, with your foot on the brake. He said it scuffs the pads and helps reduce the anoying squeak. It worked on my ES, but I never tried it on my disco. Of course there is always brake cleaner.

I just replaced my speed sensor about two weeks ago. I was having the same problem with my brakes. The most important indication it is a speed sensor is when the vehicle cuts out for breif intervals above 50MPH. By the way, I do have a bad abs sensor also. ABS light is on all the time, but I haven't had the brake problem since I replaced my speed sensor. Good Luck.

Bryan,

Sean, are the brakes original? You can try some anti-squeal grease on the back of the pads. Is this a D1 or D2?

It is a d1.
Also yes the truck cuts out at around 50 mph. Not all the time but every now and again. So thats the speed sensor also? How much is a speed sensor? And can I buy a After market part anywhere for a cheaper price. Yes the pads are all LDR.

Thanks again

I just replaced my speed sensor a couple weeks ago. Got it from DAP for $65. Nathan sells the ABS sensors (you'll probably need one of those too) for $200.

Try reseating your abs sensors before you spend money on a new one. They tend to work themselves loose on the D1.

DAP, along with most other relevant vendors, are listed in the resource section of this site.

Another question.

My antilock brakes cut in when I am stopping on paved roads. Now I was told that this was the speed sensor. But also when I get up to 60 MPH the disco revs weird, cuts out and in. Now there is a speed sensor for the back brakes and one for the front brakes. And there is one for the transmission. I can get the one for the transmission at DAP for 61.50. If I replace this one on the transmission is there a good chance that its gonna fix the ABS cutting in? Or do I need to replace the two sensors on the brakes?

Any input would help me, I really need.

Thanks
Sean

Sean, there is a chance, in fact it is most likely the speed sensor will fix both problems. The sensors at the wheels are refered to ABS sensors I'm told. In my case, as I stated above, I also have a bad ABS sensor (driver front). I probably goofed it up myself trying to reseat it. I found out the sensor was bad by checking the resitance of the sensor. (unplugged the plug for the sensor under the hood and put a meter across the two terminals. the one with no continuity is the one that is bad {again, this is to my understanding})Anyway, the stuttering above 50MPH is definately fixed with a new speed sensor. Good luck.

Jim
