Looking in to getting a 96/97 Disco and was wondering if anyone know's if diesel's are, were imported and sold in Canada? I was on the Landrover site and it only showed the diesel option for out of USA countrys so....
Thinking maybe it would be worth the drive, and maybe i'd make out good w/ the exchange rate??? Then again the tax coming back in would kill me...

Thanks,
-Matt

I'm not 100% but I don't think Canada got any Diesels either. They're imported via LRNA too so they might be as screwed as we are. If you have some spare change you can get a conversion from www.eastcoastrover.com

Why is it that LRNA refuses to do what is necessary to import the best rover models, i.e. tdi, d90... I mean sheesh.... IMHO there really is no excuse.

Why did they decide not to offer the CDL option on 2003 Discos when they could have sold it for extra money? They look at it as something that's not needed at the mall.

I don't know about the diesels, but as I hear it the D90s were discontinued in the US because the cost to make them SRS compliant post 1995(?) was not worth the effort when considering the relatively small numbers of them imported into the US.

While LR is sold as a "premium" brand (yuech!) the marketing idiots will never want to import the TD5. At least not until gas costs $5/gallon. Too bad. Maybe the sooner it does the better.

Yeah, no diesels up here. We are such a very small market compared to the US that we usually only get whatever the US gets which sucks. We used to get manual versions of cars that were only sold as autos in the US and we had diesel VWs when only gas were sold in the US. In the early 80's, the Porsche 911 Turbo was not legal in the US so Porsche scrapped the lower powered US version and sold the Euro version in Canada. That sort of thing doesn't happen any more unfortunatly.

I remember lots of Diesel VW's. I've even owned one. And they're back. But VW is the only one. Not even MB imports diesels anymore

I have been checking out this site and wishing I was in Canada.

www.landrovercentre.com/canada/welcome.htm

www.landrovercentre.com/More_Canada_export.htm

I have no idea if this is legal or what the details are, but it may be worth checking into. I know I would be calling them if I were in Canada.

I dig the XBP 5F - 1986 X-MOD 90 Soft top

Damn USA 25 year rule :(

Mel, I don't know about Mexico. I do know they have them there but from my understanding sales taxes there are very high. I asked a co-worker about this a couple of years ago and he made it sound like it may not be a easy thing to do. I was just surfing over to the Brazil Land Rover site and they have them there. They even have the D90, D110 and D130 with the Tdi and not the Td5. I don't know what it would take to bring one from Brazil but if you REALLY wanted to get one I'm sure you could.

Al, I know they did and now do import VW diesels to the US but while I believe you didn't have diesel VW A2 or A3 Jettas and Golfs, we did. I think MB still imports one diesel here.

I think that LRNA should look at how VW is selling the diesel here. My father who owns a 2001 New Beetle TDI is the best gets very good mpg and the power is not that bad. The good thing about it is that when he went to trade it in on a new Freelander they were going to give him about what he payed for it. The dealer stated that TDI's and diesel VW's are very sought after. I really think that if the Disco TDI came to the US it would do very well.

As a european who has spent a lot of time in Canada and US this is my take on it: all the manufacturers have a lot of consumer prejudice against diesels to overcome in the US and Canada alike. Many marketing decisions are influenced by the Asian manufacturers, who are not diesel experts. (Does Honda even make one?) Most people have only ever encountered those noisy and smelly units in large Ford and GMC pickups and vans and no wonder: The VW TDIs available in Canada are great but are not even the best diesels available in Europe: the new 1.4litre copmmon-rail units made by PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) are amazing, quiet, solid and 70mpg.
The hybrids now being touted by Toyota and Honda is seen as pointless where you can buy lightweight diesels which are as economical and more ecofriendly overall for a fraction of the cost.
