Hello, I have the following problem with my 95 V8 discovery and I can't locate the cause. It seems that there is excess fuel in the engine when the car is cold. In the morning when I try to start it, it becomes unstable and as soon as I start to move, the engine switches off. If I press the gas pedal fast enough, the engine won't switch off but the car will stay unstable. This instability will last until the car totally warms up, then it becomes fine (I think this is because the excess fuel is burned by the time it gets warm). I have tried a lot of things to find out why this happens everytime I drive the car and let it cool down. I have replaced the following and none fixed the problem: 1. Spark plugs. 2. Fuel filter. 3. Fuel pressure regulator. 4. Coolant temperature sensor.
My next attempt will be replacing the fuel temperature sensor, if it is malfuctioning and sending the wrong signal to the ECU, this might cause the latter to send more fuel than it should, and hence the excess fuel, what do you think? I don't believe that this is a distributor problem, but I'm open for suggestions. Thank you.

Is it giving any codes on the readout under the passenger seat? How many miles on it? Have you ever changed the cap and rotor?

Measure the resistance of the fuel temp sender (or engine temp) - should be >2k cold, ~2-300 Ohms hot before you replace it. Leaking injectors could be flooding it while standing. There is a schrader valve (like tyre) on the fuel rail to test the pressure. Put a gauge on it while running (~30psi at idle). Switch off, it should only bleed down slowly (hours not minutes). If it runs down quickly, check injectors for leakdown.

Thank you for your input guys. Bryan, I bought the car used with about 90k on it, and there was no computer reader under the passenger seat when I got it. I haven't changed the cap or rotor yet. Jp, thanks for your opinion, I will definitely take into consideration.

I had the same problem there was a fuel injector leaking in my vehicle. The local dealer didnt catch it until he took out the injectors. The leakdow test was fine but it leaked really bad out of the vehicle. I was having hard start problems in the cold and after it sat for a while. also staled if i didnt let it warm up. Not sure of it is conected but my stepper motor was also bad. 1995 disco 3.9

Peter,
If it's a 95 there is a little black box under the passenger seat that will give you a read out if something is wrong. Remove the access pannel on the side of the passenger seat, slide the seat forward and with the ignition on see if you can see any red numbers showing up from the backside of the unit. Look in the faq section to see what the codes mean. If you want to make sure the unit is working, disconnect your battery for about 10 minutes. Reconnect then turn the your ignition to on (not start), and look under the seat. The box should give you 02. It might look like 20 because the display is upside down.

Thanks guy for trying to help. Jerry, the symptoms you described are pretty much the same as the ones I'm having. So it looks like I will have to take the injectors out and test them, that sounds like it may be the cause of the problem. Bryan, I will try to locate the readout box again and see if it has any codes on it, thanks again.
