HELP!!!

for some reason, i keep blowing fuel pump fuses... i just got finished putting new brake pads on all 4 wheels, bleeding the entire brake system and putting OME springs and shocks on all 4 wheels... yesterday on my rigs maiden voyage after being on jack stands for 3 weeks, i blew a fuel pump fuse on the way to the gas station?!?!?! thinking this was just a fluke, i replaced the fuse and all seemed well.

well today (3 days later) i took a trip down to hollister hills where i went through 5 more fuses through out the course of the day. the "correct" fuse is 15 amps but through the course of the day i ended up putting 3 X 15amp fuses and 2 X 20 amp fuses!!!

the only "common" denominator that i can figure is that 4 of the times i blew a fuse i was attempting a hill climb and i broke traction... one time i went down into a rut pretty hard???? anyway, when im running flat the truck is fine, even if i loose traction while running on a level/rutty surface... but the minute i hit a steep "rutty" trail and i break traction... bam... the fuse blows and i lose all power?!?!?!

does anyone have any ideas... this REALLY sucks

thx

sounds like a bad contact, high resistance caused by shock, vibration etc. Check the connectors up the back, and replace the relay maybe. Put an ampmeter on the relay points and see how close it is to fuse rating. My other car has a 16A fuse on pump, and it draws 7 at idle.

has anyone ever replaced their own fuel pump???? i was reading the manual and it says you need a special tool LR-19-001 or LST131. but i was wondering if its possible to remove the pump with out the use of the tool without ruining the retaining ring?

It's pretty easy to remove the ring for the fuel pump. Most people just use a large screwdriver with a mallet to turn the ring. Other than that, just make sure that you buy the olives and nuts for the fuel lines. The original ones are on the fuel pump for good.

Also, before taking out the pump, you might want to blow out the area on the top of the pump so no junk gets in the tank.
