Coming home from MAR (had a great time) I experienced a sudden loss of power while cruising at 55 - 65 mph. My cruise control does not work (never has) so I was just riding along with my foot on the gas. When the power loss would happen it was as if I had suddenly taken my foot off the gas for 3 or 4 seconds, then put my foot back down on the gas...only my foot never moved off the accelerator? This started about 180 miles into a 500 mile trip yesterday after stopping to get gas. I ran that tank to 1/2 and then topped off again thinking bad gas, but the problem kept happening. Over the course of the 12 hour drive I suppose it happened a dozen times or less. The power always came back and was not accompanied by any warning lights on the dash or noise of any kind I could hear. Kind of a stumble, loss of power, then speed back up. Happens on the flats and going up or down a hill although it seems to happen more on the flats or coming down a hill. She runs fine in town, plenty of power and idles smooth. I noticed a bit of a front pinion seal leak when I got home too. Any ideas?? Ron Ward |

Did you hit the trails hard? Lots of mud underneath? Go wading in the James? VSS is a good possibility, especially given the location underneath.... -L |

Vehicle Speed Sensor. It is mounted on the rear of the transfer case. |

Would this problem throw a code or illuminate the MIL (check engine) light? How do I replace it? |

Many VSS have gone bad, but not thrown a code, unfortunately.... It's held on by two small bolts, with a plug on it. Easy change, just have to crawl under to do it. -L |
