I have a 2001 D2 and am having some major issues with it. It has been in the shop 3 times in the last 45 days. Twice it was towed into the shop. And a couple months ago, I had to have to the radiator replaced. I do very little offroad driving, so there is no reason for all this to happen. Luckily it has been covered by warranty, but in 10000 miles, the warranty runs out. The dealership has quoted me $2975 for the extended warranty, and if I have done my math correct, I wouldnt lose a whole lot more than that 3000 buying a new car. But the next question would be do I buy another landrover. The only other vehicle that I would consider would be the Z71 Tahoe. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What other problems have you had with your D2? There is no way of knowing if another Disco will give you problems. But I can say that my 1999 D2 was in the shop for each quarter of it's first year. But it has gotten much better with age. That's not to say little stuff still doesn't happen but it's much better and I take it off road as often as I can. Personally I find the Tahoe a land yacht and an odd vehicle. I even know someone who traded in her Disco for a Tahoe and now wants to go back to her Disco.

I didnt have any problems for the first year, but this summer and especially the last month, there have been serious problems - the radiator replaces; the rocker shaft broke in two, and other things.

Bummer, Will. I have a 2001 D2 which I'm stupid in love with and have had no problems with at all. I drove the Tahoe as well as the 4Runner and a few others before I bought the Rover. I'll never forget the feeling of the Tahoe. It felt tippy on turns and overall just too loose. It DID come seriously plushed-out, and SCREAMED road trip to me. Loads of room, etc., but I couldn't love the handling. The Rover is just much tighter feeling and far superior in handling, IMO. and I can find my Rover in the parking lot, unlike the gazillion Tahoes and their clones. Good luck.

will,

i'll break it to you as easy as i can, you may want to sit down for this.

- thats just how rovers can be. i have a owned mine for 11 months (bought brand new), and have had it in the shop a dozen times. and several visits were to knock out multiple issues, some were small issues some major. so you may want to just get used to it and let it roll off your back or unload the disco.

its a pain in the ass, but thats the way it is. luckily ford will probably destroy any redeeming qualities rovers have (like offroading capability) so i wont be faced with the dilema of deciding whether to buy another one later down the road.

well I dont mind the part about taking in the shop, the service is great, it is affording the service that is going to be my problem. It is not cheap. I first option would be to buy a new disco, but I cant do that every 50k miles.

I like that, "Tahoes and their clones."

American cars are so bloated, over sized and "under-shocked". My mom had a special edition Ford Explorer - (Yes, it has been rated as a BEST BUY by all the experts for the past 10 years or so. After all, it does have the "digital clock" as standard epuipment - that is a quote.)

Anyway, it drove like a boat, it felt like you were sitting inside the pillsbury dough boy when you were driving it - all plush and over designed. And before it had 70k miles on it they had replaced the transmission 3 times, done one complete re-wire, been towed four times because the lights would not turn off, and it sold for $7k at middle blue book price. Stay away from American Cars. (My brother's '99 Jeep Cherokee is just as bad.) Besides, you just can't love a Tahoe the way you love a Land Rover.

AHAHAHAAAAA!!! Karen that was hilarious!

"and I can find my Rover in the parking lot, unlike the gazillion Tahoes and their clones."

You know I had the same problem? My Disco was at the bodyshop for some work so I rented a Grand Cherokee for the week. I couldn't believe it when I went somewhere. When I came back to the parking lot, I couldn't find the truck! It was like it somehow magically spawned itself. There were 3 other JGC of same model and color nearby! I felt so stupid because I didn't know which one was mine. Had to stand there and click the key remote on and off to see which truck's lights blinked....never felt so stupid in my life. That's never happened to me in my Disco, even if there's more than one nearby. They all look different.

Needless to say, I was EXTREMELY happy when I got my Disco back. I felt a little silly because it was like someone missing their dog or something I was so happy. I hated driving that GC that week. I even tried to trade it for a car after two days but they had nothing left.

"Can I have that Corolla over there?"
"Sorry sir, that's spoken for."
"Is there ANYTHING??"
"No sir, sorry."
"Doh!!!"
"...do you have a bicycle??"

I wouldn't worry about the radiator - I got mine replaced as well and I know a Rover mechanic who said they all leak eventually. The new ones are better than the orginals though.

I have 32K on mine and no worries - knock on wood.

These cars are expensive to maintain. Bottom line. If you are mechanically inclined you can save a fortune. Example: new brakes from dealer-$450

DO it yourself - less than 1/2 that

oil - easy

Your other alternative is buying the warranty and know that you will never have to spend more than that for repairs - assuming it covers everything.

Truthfully, I do worry about mine long term - post 100K - more the electronics than anything else. But for now - no way I would drive anything else -

I do like the Tahoe's but after reading how they handle....

And you never know - once Ford screws up Rover your disco might be a collectors item!

Will,

I'll echo what has been said...they are high maintenance little pigs. Mine like Al's has seemed to improve with age. Although, this summer new radiator #2 went in (still under warranty) the ••••••••••• said that this is an improved unit over the last two....looks like the same plastic tanked piece of crap to me. When it craps out again and not under warranty....I'll be giving Griffin radiator a call with the specs to build one right.
