I test drove 1999 disco2 and have notice that when i punch the gas all of way (on any speed)it switches to a lower gear for a faster acceleration. When i drive my 1999 disco 1(i have 40k miles on it) and i'm about 50-60mph i punch the gas pedal all of way down but it has no responce it takes a while to accelarate (don't switch to a lower gear),is this a problem ore disco 2 simply "faster " then disco1?

Thanks

-Eugene

Does the engine respond? I think the transmission will shift if the engine is being forced into higher RPMs, which in turn forces the down-shift in the transmission. I am no expert though. It could be just an engine tunning problem, not producing the right amount of tourque to cause the down-shift. Seems like the type of thing that would just get worse the older the car is without a tune-up.

Well, it's not right, but I think it is "normal". You should get it checked, if you think there really is a problem.

In other words, it should be shifting down when you step on it.

Just adjust the kickdown linkage on the D1 to make it grab a lower gear faster. Instructions in the workshop manual are there. Very simple and fast to do - only takes two wrenches. Very slight adjustments make a big difference.

If you open your hood, and take a look at the top of your intake, there are 2 cables attached to it. One is attached to the gas pedal, and the other runs to a unit mounted to the side of the engine compartment. This is (I believe) the detent (SP) cable, and causes the transmission to downshift for passing/quicker acceleration. If there is slack in the cable, the transmission may not be getting the signal to downshift when you drop the pedal. In newer vehicles, these are usually electronically controlled, wheras older vehicles were vaccum or mechanically controlled. Adjustments should be made carefully, as the sensor will burn itself out quickly if not adjusted properly. Not sure of how to do this on the Discos, but I'm sure a call to the dealer will get you a quick how-to.

My 1998 disco wouldnt down shift either at 50-60mph on the freeway. This was really annoying. I would have to manually move the shift lever into 3 to get the kickdown. A couple months ago I put on a set of 245/75/16 dunlop radial rover R/T's. This messed with the gearing just enough that now when I floor it I get a downshift everytime. At freeway speeds the bigger tires actually helped acceleration some. Who'd a thought? I always thought that the gearing in the truck just kept it from shifting at that particular speed.

Yeah, I have a 95 disco, and this happens to me too. It was really killer when I went over to New Mexico and was going up the big hills. I'd go from about 80 MPH to 50 MPH before it would downshift. I'd pass the Semis going down the hill, then they'd pass me going up the hills, kinda sad. I had to Downshift to 3rd to make it up the hills without getting below 50 MPH.

Guess I'll take a look at that setting too.
