Anyone care to off up any experiences with these two tires?

I've been leaning toward the BFG's but the Pirelli's are quite a bit cheaper and the Tire Rack rates them a bit higher.

I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Pirelli's and would recommend them.

For kicks I'll also take comments about the Yokohama Geolander AT's as well.

At $89 bucks a pop why not.

Can't speak for the BFG's, but I recently replaced my Michelin's with a set of Pirelli Scorpions. I was swayed by Tire Rack's survey results concerning snow traction as well as the lower price. I've only got about 500 miles on them (all dry street driving), but so far I like them. Noticeably quieter ride, and much stickier around corners. Can't wait for ski season here in Colorado to try them on the snow.

From the reading and research I did, I think the BFG's will be a much better off-road tire than the Pirelli, but since I do mostly highway and snow I felt this was the better tire.

I have the Pirelli Scorpion AT's they do well in the rain (I live in Seattle.) They are great on the road and handle freeway speeds quite well (I believe they are H rated.) I find they do well off road. I think that if you had them sniped that they would work a great deal better off road, especially in the mud. The tread is a two layer type the top is aggresively cut but a few millimeters down there is a less aggressivly cut tread. Not being an expert this is why it handles so well on road and why it can't get a grip in the mud. If I air down I tend to do well on trails around here.

I find that having tires sniped is rather bad, causing blowouts if you are at higher speeds when shot.

Siping, OTOH, is supposed to help a lot...

Discount tire offers the service on all the tires they sell. I took my wifes car in and they offered siping on the yokahoma all season tires for the Jetta...

Leslie , I guess I don't want my tires sniped :) though some days I do wish I could take out a few assholes tires that cut me off when trying to leave a safe following distance.

I replaced the stock Michelins with Pirelli Scorpion A/T's. They were fine in snow and rain. Tended to get noisy at the end. The end came at about 20K miles in Colorado. Generally Pirelli's are soft tires. I got them for a very good price so I went with them. My new set are 245/75-16 Dunlop R/T's with 2" OME lift. So far very happy with them.

I have always had BFGs ATs on my trucks for many years now. I am extremely happy with them, yes I know they are a bit pricey but let me tell you its worth it. They perform very well off-road, their sidewalls are extremely tough, and I have had them last up 120K, the truck was ready to blow up from being so old and the damn tires were brand new still. And might I also add that I beat the fucking shit out of these tires and nothing ever happenes to them.

Robert is right about the BFGs. I'm on my twelfth set (if memory serves). I will only run BFGs on my trucks for daily driving.

That said, I am looking at a set of mudders to carry around for 'wheeling though.

The BFGs are expensive, but I had a set that lasted me 110K miles-no shit! If rotated at all regularly, they will last for quite a while.

I have the Pirelli's on my truck now, (bought from tire rack) and I like them. They have handled well in the rain and I've even been off road a few times with them and they did fine.

I have the Pirelli's on my FJ62 and before the first snow flies in PA this season, the D2 will have them on as well. Can't offer you any experience with the BFG's or Yoko's. However, FWIW over the years I've gone through some Yoko A0008R's on some high stress road cars...good tires.

I have the Pirellis on my D1 and just recently replaced them. I did not even know about the special on the internet, but called a friend who rebuilds/restores Series, Range Rovers & D1s and he recommended the Pirellis. So far, they have been a great tire for the streets and city driving, extremely quiet. Rain & water have been superb handling, as we went through a week of straight water and I never had any problems with traction. As for BFG, I can not attest to that, other than many friends have those and they swear by them. I think either way you go will be determined by what you want to do with your truck.
