Does anyone have any nifty little tool to help remove the stock crossbars from the roof rack on a 95 Disco? Everytime I put them on I wonder if I'll ever get them off again. Those little spring-loaded releases are damned near impossible! I even gouged my paint using a screwdriver once :( Any suggestions appreciated.

Ok, so am I a complete wimp and nobody else has trouble with this? Or do I just have to live with it?

Mike,

I don't thin there is a tool but I run accross the same type of problem. I will try to explain what I do.

With my thumb holding the indent on one side I push the entire bar towards the other side. This allows enough leverage to depress the spring. I gave up trying to push the spring in with my thumb a while back because it is painfull and it is a fairly strong spring. hope this helps.

Brian,

There is a tool, it resembles one of the blank-covers taken off the back of a PC when you add a new card. It's nothing special, though, just something to push with. I've always just used my fingers, never bothered with the tool, at least on the '99.... I've never tried the ones on the '95, guess I need to check to see if they're particularly stiff or not.

Mike,
Regardless, I would suggest taking the rails off, and using some sort of cleaner, and work the slides back and forth to un-gum them if yours really are that tough to move. Any old thing ought to work to help you push them....

You could post on the "Wanted" board if you just HAD to have the genuine gizmo, but I'm sure that you can find something that works every bit as well if you search around your basement or junk drawers...

Good luck,

-L

Maybe I've got one and just didn't know it! I bought my Disco from my dad who bought it new so if it was ever there it probably still is. I'll have a look this evening.

I've got my ski rack hard-mounted to the bars so I use them a lot during ski season. But I don't like leaving them up all the time because they create a lot of extra wind noise.

Good idea on cleaning/lubing them - why didn't I think of that? I'll give them a good going over. If I find any trick or tool that helps I'll post back here.

Thanks :)

Yeah, Robbie, that's it.... :)

Mike, if your Dad bought it new, it should be around somewhere....

Good luck w/ it...
