My -96 with 3.9 engine (I'm in Europe) has recently started to make a noice under load. It can be heard at acceleration or going up a hill at any speed. Seems to come from passenger side(?), is not very loud but is a sort of ticking/pinging sound that goes away completely when throttle is let off, nothing at idle either. This has not developed gradually, drove the truck for the first time in a over a week yesterday (other family member uses it daily) and I noticed it immediatly. My thoughts are at leaking manifold or timing problems, what do you think and any opinions on how to check the above items? Truck is well maintained and runs well in all other aspects. Thanks, T |

I would take a look at the manifold gaskets. My 98 DI 4.0 does the same thing from the drivers side. |

OK fixed the problem this weekend. As suspected it was the r/h Y-pipe that had worked loose from the manifold. After tightening the really hard to get to bolts, all is back to normal, big relief. Thanks, T |
