I have a 97 with a problem. The key for the ignition doesn't work in the doors. If the keyless remote or battery dies, I'm screwed. Is it possible for me to adjust the doorlocks myself? How big of a job is it? Any special tools required? Pictures would be a big help too.
Thanks.

That's bizzare, because found I have exactly the same problem a couple of days ago. However, I have no evidence to show that the door locks, or keys have ever been changed.

The key I have is an original, and will operate the ignition and filler cover, but not the doors, driver/passenger or rear.

I looked into changing the locks [with new key set] all round, but it was nearly $300 so I didn't bother. You can buy the lock barrels individually, but not sure if you can set them for your key. My dad had a similar problem when his drivers door lock was knackered by vandals, BMW just matched the lock to his keyset, so it must be possible - just not sure if you can do it for the Disco. I'll give my local garage a ring later on and see what they say.

Matt.

Yeah, odly enough, I have a different key for the fuel cover. Anyone with a parts manual, or who works for a dealership know what it costs for new barrels? Parts #?

I have just spoken to a specialist, they said it needs a whole new lock system if you want to have the same key all round £200 ($300) but you can retain the existing r/c fob.

However, I found the following two parts RTC6689 & RTC6690 which seem to be R & L hand door lock barrels for the Disco, I believe they come with their own key, and are only £8.97 ea. ($15) Maybe someone can confirm this ?

The specialist suggested that I order a new key for my Disco from LR using it's chassis number. Then I would find out if someone has changed the door locks, or ignition lock and go from there. A novel, but potentially fruitless option.

It's going in to LR at the end of March for a service, I'll get a key ordered then and see what happens from there.

If nothing comes of that I'll just go for a new drivers side barrel and key (RTC6690) would mean two keys, but a lot less money !

"The specialist suggested that I order a new key for my Disco from LR using it's chassis number."

Yeah, I did that too - it didn't fit the ignition OR the doors!

Ten bucks for the key to be made and it didn't even work. Waste of money right there. I wouln't suggest doing it, UNLESS the dealer guarantees that he'll not charge you if it doesn't work.

If you can remove the barrels and the lock mechanism, can a locksmith adjust them to the key?

Anyone try that before? Why haven't we heard from the LR mechanics?
