I've had one rebuilt by a good shop. Cost me $49 and change about 2.5 years ago. Been perfect ever since.

Brian, it's not worth trying to rebuild an alternator. Shops have lathes to machine commutators and tools to check diodes, and rewind the stator wiring etc. I've only fitted new brushes to other vehicle alt's, but for what a shop charges to reco on it's better left to the experts. As Peroneford said he paid $49 a couple of years ago, it's still cheap motoring.

Depends on the alternator. The late Marelli now say 'no part available'. On my 92, there is a Toyota regulator/brush assembly that fits right in. Bearings may require pressing in and out. Rear bearing may need slip ring unsoldered on some models - or is that Lucase ACR series?

Very good points. It is off a 96 disco. My real question rfelates to the voltage regulator. Anyone know if that is a replaceable part? 50 buck sounds like a bargan to rebuild an alternator.

My local shop charges $45 labor and parts and says they can rebuild anything. I believe them ever since they rebuilt a '53 Chrysler cranking motor for me.

Even I wouldn't rebuild my own alternator and I have a ham radio license and a soldering iron:-)!

For alternator parts, try RAM Electric. I got a voltage regulator from them for the Marelli unit on my '95 Disco -- even though LR claims this is a non-rebuildable item.

Another BS story from LR dealership,my altenator went bad under warranty and was replaced with a rebuilt unit of course the bill stated it was new,
close to a $700.00 job.
