What is the history of the power train used in the N.A Freelander? Is the 2.5-liter engine and transmission used anywhere else in the world? I have asked this question to my local Land Rover dealerships and their response was "It has been used for years" but could not specify what vehicle. Any info would help me in making a purchase� |

The 2.5 engine and Jatco trans are available in the Freelander in most markets worldwide. You can ONLY get the auto with the 2.5 there is no manual option anywhere. The engine and trans were introduced in the 2000 model year when BMW were in charge of things. The engine is a Rover motor that is about 6-7 years old. It is also available in Rover sedans and MG's. The trans is made by Jatco in Japan and is available in several vehicles including Nissan and (I think) Subaru. Jatco's web site has details. Other motors available in the Freelander are a 1.8 4 cyl gasoline and a 2.0 4 cyl turbo diesel. The 1.8 is an old Rover motor as well. The Diesel is made by Steyr in Austria and was developed by BMW. It is also used in BMW 3 series diesel vehicles. The 1.8 is only available with a manual trans. The Diesel has either manual (a nice Gertrag unit)or the Jatco auto. If your dealer doesn't know this basic info they don't deserve your business. |

I believe that the 1.8 petrol is the same power plant as the first series MGF convertable. The Td4 models are also available with a manual transmission. |

The V6 was also used or is a development of the engine used in the Sterling/Rover 825/825, and was also licensed to Kia and used in their vehicles. It is now made by Midland Powertrain, as is the 1.8 Diesel that LR recently sold to them. Midland Powertrain was created when BMW was selling off its English arms. Except for Cowley, north of Oxford that builds the MINI. The Mini uses a shrunken engine from Chrysler Neon which is actually cast in Brazil. nextGen FORD/Jag/LR diesels will also be rough cast in Brazil...where our favorite 2.8 liter TDi is now made...and installed in Ford Rangers built in Brazil....which about brings us full circle back to the USA... |
