Am I right in thinking I need to search out a late D1 front cover for such an engine?

Pretty sure you want a 95 front cover. It has a dizzy hole and the new style oil pump.

94 Disco also has it, and 95 only RRC. Met a guy who claimed to drill the GEMS cover for a distributor, but never saw it in person. Same offset as every buick v6/8 up until the late 70s so finding one to get datum lines from should be easy if you have to go this route, then make a plate for the cam sensor hole.
