My question this Crosslander appears to not have ABS or Airbags. I thought that this was the reason that the Defender could no longer be imported to the US. Then how can this vehicle conform to Federal mandates?

I was thinking the same thing. On that note, I don't think Hummer H1s have airbags either, how are they legal?

A semi doesn't have airbags either... I think once it gets to a certain weight, it's not considered a passenger vehicle and exempt from certain regulations.

a local dealer had one for sale. i had to stop to see what kind of ungodly creation it was. sloppy body work, paint is rough and seams don't seem to match up evenly. it seemed to be a crude bronco like designfor suspension. by the time u get within a few feet of one u can tell how poor the quality is.

So it has IFS and rear leaf springs? Yikes...I guess we will have to yank out lots of these, now!

I predict that 90% of the people who will even look at them with not know/care enough to notice sloppy paint, bad lines, etc. It will be a BLING thing. Think 300c hemi...few buyers care about that engine in there...they just want a pimped ride. H2 owners for the most part couldnt tell you how to engage the transfer case. They just want dubs on that mofo!

I think they are priced too low to be a BLING thing.

IFS and leafs are not that bad. I had a 1988 4runner with IFS and leafs and it took me everywhere my Land Rovers now go. If they ever do go on sale here in California I wont be above at least looking at on and seriously consider buying if the price is right. Could be a fun truck.

My question is whether or not it is sloppy body work or just functional body work. I mean the Defender doesn't have nice clean lines which is part of the character of it.

"The Cross Lander 244X is aimed at the 4x4 enthusiasts, a segment that has been virtually overlooked by those manufacturers competing in the luxury sport utility vehicle space. The 244X is a no-nonsense, no-frills vehicle that offers consumers in the off-road market segment a vehicle with both personality and power, at an affordable price"

That just about sums it up. I am really curious to try one out, I hope that it's a success because maybe it will send a message to some of the other manufacturers. Is the 4.0 V6 the same V6 the LR3 is going to get by any chance? Just curious, that would set some people at ease I think if it had a more well-known and trusted power-plant in it.

I'm with ya. I don't know if it's an investor scam or a piece of crap or whatever,,, but I hope they pull thru & sell here b/c at least someone is disengaging from the luxury SUV trend that has completely taken over LR & offering something for what really is our target market. I still can't get over LR not thinking a bare bones Defender would sell here,,but,, that's another thread,,, ,,, somehow J**p is able to keep offering up new models geared to the trail they keep selling,,,

Well, it sounds like the Wrangler is going the way of the Defender, too. Apparently thenew versoin in 2008 will lose the I6 and go independent suspension. Anyway, I don't know if LR doesn't think the current Defender would sell here, but they may not be able to sell enough to be profitable, that is why I think they don't bring it back. I agree totally though, there is no single vehicle on Earth that I would rather be driving than a nice Defender. Unfortunately, I have a hard time justifying paying the price for a used one. Hopefully overseas imports will be priced a lot better when they start coming over in 2008.

The Crosslander will never become mainstream if they ever become available. Once you price it out with the offroad options it's the same price as a Rubicon XL. I'd rather have the Jeep when I'm out in East BumF*ck and need a belt, bearing or u-joint. The backwoods NAPA ain't gonna stock Crosslander parts.

You are probably right. But, I hope they do well. I was told I was crazy when I bought a Suzuki Samurai the firs year they offered them in the states. I was not going to get parts, service would be crap, it cant wheel and it would go the way of the Dodo in a year or two. Well they were wrong but Suzuki had alot more money to put behind there product than Crosslander. Lets hope they do well.

Suzuki had an infusion of cash and support by GM. Crosslander has, well, nuttin. I had a gray market Sammie back before they were even called Samurais. We ran it on the beach and in the jungle of Kauai and it was FAR better than the CJ7 my brother had. Even a mainstream truck can tank like the Dodge Raider... anyone remember the Daihatsu Rocky? Neat lookin and could wheel really well, but try to get a part for one.
Crosslander will meet the same fate... I'd put money on it.

I'd Give it a shot...

It supposedly has some ford parts in it besides the engine which can be good or bad...
I personally hope it does well...Competition will send the message to LR...I would LOVE a Defender, but its hard to justify the price on a used one of those when balancing a possible divorce over it...Who knows...I vote for success
