In my past experience, getting the right angle with your breaker bar (as close to 90 degrees with the socket as you can) prevents torquing the socket in the wrong direction and is the biggest key to not rounding off the bolts. Also, a ratcheting breaker bar helps tremendously when trying to get at the firewall bolts. Then find a good pipe and go to town.
