random note...

I just got the latest catalog in the mail over the weekend.

When I first started the Rover thang 5 or so years ago, this advertisement primarily featured D1s, D2s, and Defenders with a smattering of stuff for the newer lines.

The latest edition is heavy on the LR3 with some L322 & RRS love tossed in and the obligatory Defender stuff. The Disco has some featured products, but basically relegated to lip service.

I guess the guard has changed.

Who wants to pay AB prices for a D1 worth 2 grand? Not most of their customers. They have to follow the money.

I've got a $275 package on the way from AB now. They are the go-to for all the misc pieces parts that time is taking a toll on (mainly exterior trim).

I like AB. I order it and it shows up when they said it would, and sufficiently packed to survive the trip. I have also have great luck with Lucky 8.

Would be cool to see a solid axle conversion kit for the LR3. (Forgive me if there's already one out there, I haven't kept up.) Those big ass wheel wells should gobble up some 35s with minimal if any cutting.

The newest Disco is 13 years old, not sure why it's so surprising they've moved their focus to popular newer models

I know. It was one of those instances where time passing on really hits you in the face.

Or when the sales clerk coming up to you in a store and asking "Can I help you?" really means "Can I help you?" and not "What are you doing in this store you wretched little urchin?"

Solid axles shouldn't happen. The terrain management system is fantastic, and you would lose that with solid axles and be stuck with essentially a fatter D2.

Besides, we already stuffed 35s into those wheel wells while maintaining the OE drivetrain

Terrain response could easily work with solid axles. It's just a brake/power modulation system (traction control) based on pre-set modes and various sensors that are present regardless of suspension type. That said, solid axles on the D3/4 platform would be extremely difficult mechanically. The frame and body layout are not accommodating for the hardware required.

Unrelated but would you also lose terrain response with a coil conversion on an LR3/4? It's my understanding the air suspension attempts to mimic a solid axle which would appear to be a major advantage. As some people have made the move to coils and I'm skeptical of the claim there aren't any serious drawbacks in performance.

No, they're separate systems. You lose articulation, as you alluded to.

I imagine you would lose it, as the truck would lose the ability to monitor each wheel speed

Two different issues. He's talking about moving from air-struts to springs, which doesn't effect wheel speed sensors.

There's no reason you can't have wheel speed sensors on a solid axle swap. Even D1 axles came with them stock for ABS. You'd have to do some work to get the right signal from whatever axles you used, but it's possible.
