Things to do in Detroit?

My trip to Haiti fell through so I am going to be in Chicago and Detroit in a week. I wanted some place with the same amount of crime and hopelessness only bone chillingly cold. Chicago I know my way around well enough. I have never been to Detroit other than dropping off parts. I want to go to the art musem before they auction it to pay for street lights and view the ruins of the city before they sell it for scrap to the Arabs. Any ideas on places to eat and cool things to see are appreciated.

Every time I've had to work in Detroit I stayed in Windsor. Head to Windsor.

Detroit has speed boat races every weekend in the summer, but it's winter time so head to Windsor.

Marty, take a trip to Birmingham. Among other things, they usually have ice sculpture exhibition around Christmas.
In downtown, Renaissance Building is a good place to hang around when the weather is miserable. I've never been to the casino in Detroit, maybe it isn't that bad.
Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village is an absolute must on my list whenever I visit the area (10 years ago last time).

Windsor... my old impressions were that it was a shithole like Atlantic City, but I may have been mistaken or things have changed.

Peter, I was in Detroit in the 2000's. Got held up at gun point and one time a pit bull cornered several of us in the gas station and the guy in the gas station pointed a gun at us and told us to get the fuck out. Maybe Detroit has changed since I was there last, but Windsor was like a 24 hour rave when I stayed there and Detroit seemed like a toilet.

Shit even when I went to school at ABB Robotics in auburn hills that place was a dump.

Mike, I wasn't "held" at gunpoint in Detroit but kept walking because I didn't realize this until it was over; a fellow grad student was shot walking from his car parked a couple of blocks from school - so I don't extoll Detroit's virtues much. Just that there is a few things to do in the suburbs, and fewer - in town.
My Windsor memories are 17 years old, so things must have improved since.

We arrived to Detroit on a Saturday, and next morning I went out and bought a Sunday issue of Detroit News. It had a full front-page article about two punks kicked out of a disco who came back and shot up the dance party with AK47s.
It was horrifying at the first glance. At the second, I figured out that the guys used 60 rounds in a dense crowd at point-blank range, and only killed two. Chances like that I'd take.

Strip bars in Windsor. It's been about fifteen years since I've been there, but they were damn good back then.

There's also good Lebanese food in Dearborn.

My mom is 1/2 Lebanese and grew up in Dearborn. I still have no desire to ever go there.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go to Dearborn, but if I was in the Detroit area I rather go to Dearborn than Detroit proper.

I get my fill of Lebanese food when I visit my wife's family in Toledo. There's plenty of good Lebanese food there. It's good enough that I don't need to head up to Dearborn.

You're about a month too late for Devil's Night, but that doesn't mean you can't set some vacant buildings on fire.

Thanks Peter. You are the one worthwhile post in this thread. That's better than average odds for dweb.
