I would like to change the gear oil in the transfer case of our 00 Disco II. Is there any tricks or tips in doing the service?

Do I need a special tool to remove the plugs? (what do I need to remove plugs)

Thanks

on a dI you need a 1/2 inch socket driver, probly the same for a dII, if not it's probly a 3/8th socket driver. you need some sort of pump to pump the oil back up into the t box though. autozone carries a hand pump like a basketball pump. if they have a pump nozzle (like in a soap dispenser) get that one. if it's cold outside heat the oil up so it's thinner. you'll know what i mean if you dont.

you will need

a 1/2 socket drive. Make sure you loosen the fill hole first to make sure you can get it out. It is a tight squeeze up there. I used an offset 1/2 socket drive with a 1/2 ujoint type drive on the end. I had start with the ujoint attached and then use just the socket. THe last little bit will have to be done with your hand. Once the filler hole is loose then undo the drain hole.

I bought a pump at autozone for about $5. Use that to refill. Manual says use locktite on the plugs.

Awesome....great...

I have the RAVE and printed the manual page...but wanted to know real life how it is to do...

The first step says 'Release fitting' WTF is that? lol I am sure it will be obvious when i get the car on the lift.

Loctite 290 is medium I assume?

The fluid is (from rave) Texaco Multi-gear 75w/20r oil... is this something a regular parts store would have? Does it have to be texaco..or any 75w/20r oil?

I am taking an automechanics class at the local high school..wanted to punch out a few service items while I am there...

Going to do an oil change (done it before- no biggie)...

How about doing a cooling system flush? we have an awesome transfusion machine that I used on my chevy truck there..it forces new coolant into the radiator hose..and recovers it from the radiator..wicked neat! ...can I use that..or follow what the service manual says (haven't looked at that procedure yet)

Thanks...

Paul
