01 Disco II...210k. Temp gauge has never moved, but with temps at 104 outside and A/C idling in traffic...it moved up and up...stayed in the white area and as soon as I was moving it went back down to where it usually sits. New rad, therm and good coolant levels and never any isssues...just replaced those about a year ago as a precaution also.

So I have never replaced the fan clutch...I aways do the "free-wheeling" test when hot...and it has some resistance.....my question is do these things go bad all at once or is it a gradual thing? In any event, I am replacing along with the fan(mine has a crack in it)

I am not sure with the temps on the east coast at record breaking temps is causing things to get hot but figured I would err on the side of caution.

I keep reading about an aux A/C fan? Call me a moron but where the F is that? Is that for a certain year or....? Should I have one...no idea where the f it is? :banghead:

Single electric fan on the pass side. You'll see it in a shroud/cage just inside the grill. It's powered through a relay and 40 amp fuse in the engine bay power dist. block. It should be spinning at engine temps of 200+ with the AC on.

If it's failing, squeaking, or binding, I'd recommend pulling the fuse before you roast the wiring to the fan and air temp sensor. That 40 amp fuse doesn't seem to protect the wiring. I'm thinking about trying a 30 amp to see if it's adequate to save myself from doing the job again... or running 10-12 gauge wire.

Fan clutches and water pumps seem to have a similar life cycle to one another. I'd seriously considering doing both at the same time. BP Utah has a pretty nice aftermarket pump with a brass impeller. Higher capacity.

Best of luck.

Actually with AC on it should always come on as long as ambient temp is 82. Without AC it only comes on with engine coolant temps at 212 +

Does it get the reading from the temp indicator inside the car on the HVAC readout - or elsewhere...?

Just had mine replaced - trying to see if it is working or not...

Doesn't seem with the condensor in the way that it would do much good (in terms of moving air) when temps get to 212...that is pretty warm.

the ambient is from the air sensor in the front of the truck, it will be infront of the grill.

the coolant temp sensor is either the ECT sensor on the intake manifold, OR dependong on the year, the SAI ECT sensor that is in the bottom of the radiator.

either way, the engine ecu turns it on IIRC.

BUT, you should not be overheating, so adding a fan is not fixing the problem. they tested these things in Dubai in the desert at 120+ degrees and the only modification was a grill that flowed more air at speed.
