So my instrument cluster got damaged while I had the dash apart... (don't ask) I found a suitable replacement from a wrecked '00 D2 with similar mileage. Would this be a direct swap? Does the ECU need to be told to communicate with the new cluster? Any potential issues?

I tried searching, but I couldn't find a thread with a similar question.

Thanks in advance.

should be a direct swap. You will have to find someone with testbook/rovacom to sync up the cluster and bcu. Otherwise your odometer will constantly flash at you, but it'll still work. Warning! when you sync the cluster and bcu it will program whichever one has the highest stored mileage, so if that cluster had 150K on it and your original bcu only had 100K, it will now show 150K.
