I have an 03 disco that falls into the vin# with the engine problems. it has 71k miles and no engine problems, but is this a matter of time before the engine blows. what do you guys suggest?? we are the original owners and no warranty. thanks

Earliest failure I saw was about 10. That was a brand new engine out of the crate that went south in the parking lot with the new owner in it. Still bought the car, though. Think about that. You're looking at buying your first Rover, and the engine grenades while the salesman is going over the features. Doncha' think God was trying to tell you something? We had replaced the engine because it used a quart of oil a week. All the piston rings were lined up straight, she gulped oil since new.
Second, towed in at 1,200 miles, came apart with such force that it took out the timing chain, stopping it dead. Crank, and all internals were perfect. Longest failure I saw was just under 60K. The outer gear cracked, and pressure was low at idle causing the light to come on. Again, the internals were perfect. Customer ate this one.

I knew nothing about the problems with the '03 engine/oil pump. Can one of you send me the link with the VIN# range? I just bought my '03 about 2 weeks ago. I still have the warranty until November. It only has 38,000 miles on it. I wish I would have done more homework prior to making my vehicle purchase.

Thanks.

Several of the failures we saw were outside the VIN range. They don't have a clue. Short of disassembling a running engine and inspecting the wear on the oil pump, there are no indications of imminent failure.

I was wondering if I could get the link to the LRNA techincal website to try and look up how many 2003 Discos have had this problem and how many land rover fixed.

Hey Guys,
I'm new here but I too am a victim of the failed oil pump. Mine went out in Dec, 5 days after the warranty expired, @ 44K miles. Had it towed to land rover and went back and forth with corporate. By the time that I found the TSB the local LR dealer told me that I had to either authorize the new engine or remove the vehicle immediatly. Took it to an independent LR guy, a big one here in San Diego, he confirmed the oil pump failure as the cause. Confronted with this, LR is now telling me that they will not do anything for me since their Tech's did not inspect the vehicle and that it was removed from the dealership. No actual work has been done on the car, and all parts are available for LR to inspect. Still nothing. I am now suing them in small claims court. I filed a complaint with NHTSA in Dec. Any advice or a contact person at LR would be huge. I just bought the car in August, so this really sucks. Also hats off to Jim Newman, owner of The Rover Group. He's kept the truck there for me, he diagnosed it for me. Single handedly this guy has done more to keep me loyal to Land Rover than all the people at LR I've talked to.

I have an 03 with 117,000 miles on it. Do you guys think I need to worry about he oil pump still? I've been trying to decide if I should trade it or not . I had the heads done 90,000 and they said everything looked good, though i'm sure they didn't look at the oil pump.

are there any symptoms per se? or is this just a wait and see what happens sorta thing? sounds like a total loss is the outcome, hate to have that lingering over without knowing how to keep up on it or catch early signs

I've got around 70K right now. Only problems I've had were replacing plug wires around 60K and my drivers side regulator on the fritz.

HI all - bringing this one back to life, has anyone got the Vin range for these problems. A mate with a 4.0 03 just had his pump go bang...nice!

Cheers

I had the same issue. VIN SALTW6423A795894, miles 53,921.
I removed the oil light switch and found that it would switch at 8psi or less.
I removed the oil pan and found that the oil screen was clear
I removed front cover and found the strangest oil lump failure I have ever seen. The outside of the outer ring of the gerotor was fractured and scored on the outside. Similarly the timing cover had score marks where the outer ring of the gerotor contacted it. The ?normal wear? area where both gears contact the pump housing looked more typical of a used pump.
Could anyone send me a PDF of Service Bulletin #: 031201? lance.onan@hotmail.com
Thanks

I had my oil pump go out at 105K. Luckily i caught it before any damage to the engine could be done but land rover refused to give anything because the only part that was damaged was the pump. I replaced the oil pump myself and will hopefully get another 105K out of it.
