I have coolant leak on bottom nipple of expansion tank. Going to fix tomorrow. But I have one question. Are the coolant lines suppose to get very hot? i.e. too hot to touch after running truck for 3-4 minutes at stand still? The coolant lines also get a little hard, I can still press them in but just not as much as when the truck is off.

thanks

For real tech...Yes, the coolant lines will get hot but, too hot to touch maybe maybe not.

And the coolant lines can build up quite a bit of pressure. That's normal so no worries.

Just fix the expansion tank.

I've seen those trucks Idle up right under 220deg no worries, they just run a bit warmer than my 4.0 ever does.

Ya, my 03 runs the same, just replaced expansion for the same leak. Be careful of those plastic lines running from tank to intake heater and from tank to driver side of radiator, they get good and brittle...snap. You might want to have both lines on hand just in case or replace with expansion tank. Lines seem to get real hot like you say and over time fn brittle.

Ironic. I've just replaced both of my lines that run from the expansion tank. They became old and brittle, and just snapped.

Replaced them all with the rubber ones from AZ bulk - never had any issues with them. Much better for all around work on the engine as you no longer have to worry about the lines snapping again.

Had the same leak - I also replaced all the snap clamps (or whatever you call them) with screw tight ones. Been working great for 5+ years.

Good Luck!

My expansion tank nipple broke as well. I just cleaned the tank drilled and tapped the existing hole and replaced the nipple with the closest one that I could find at Lowes. I did put a little RTV on the Threads but I think it would have been fine without the RTV. No leaks since May 11

replaced tank yesterday. Lines didn't break or anything. From above if I get a new leak it will be the first thing to check.

new expansion tank started to leak at front seam, we noticed it after about 100 miles. LR dealer said they have seen this issue on new expansion tanks. Replaced tank today, hopefully this new one is ok.

Older thread revival...Has anyone thought of or actually reinforced the the bottom nipple on the expansion tank before? I know some expansion tanks have a brass fitting in the lower nipple which gives it some strength. It seems the DII tank is pure shit so if that part were reinforced when replaced in a truck, would that help? Maybe something like paint on bedliner or similar, just around the nipple...you get the picture.

Mine just failed here and it was all soft and gummy so I just bought a new one and will be replacing it.

Expansion tank leak hasn't come back, but I just replaced the upper radiator hose as coolant was leaking at the bleeder

Right but I'm wondering if you could reinforce the nipples on the expansion tank with something...like paint on bedliner or that rubber stuff you dip tool handles in. Something to keep those from cracking and leaking. Maybe I need to give it a try.

I don't think painting anything on is going to reinforce anything....
