I need to change hub assembly TAY100060 (wheel bearing) - front left. Service manual says to change drive shaft oil seal FTC4822, but in order to do so I would use a couple of SPX tools to set the new seal, LRT-54-012 and LRT-99-003. Tools cost $138, seal is $17. Does this really need to be done? I have a press and can remove the hub\axle, but was thinking of using Snap on CJ-123-1 (see pic) to separate the hub from the axle on the truck. Would this work?

edit: I can't post pic of CJ-123-1, I deleted my old attachments, but it still thinks I have 20 :(

Just be careful when pulling the CV/axle out and inspect really well to make sure the seal wasn't leaking. If all is well leave it alone and carefully reinstall the axle/cv/hub and all should be fine.

edit: Didn't see a pic but what I've done in the past was to loosen every thing up, pull the axle nut, then hit the center of the axle with an air hammer enough to move the axle back a few milimeters. I then pull the whole thing out and a good blow to he axle while supporting the hub and it falls right out. I only had to use a press on one rear that appeared to have had a ton of red locktite on the splines.

I've replaced the seals before. Use a seal puller, couple of bucks at any auto parts store, tap the new one in with a block of wood and a mallet.
No big deal.

Seal was leaking so I just removed axle shaft. Old seal removed with 3 jaw slide hammer type puller. Then I used 2 inch plastic pipe coupler to set new seal, much cheaper $3. The Snap On CJ-123-1 didn't fit the studs in hub (holes to small), but my other slide hammer one worked great to remove the hub and axle.

nice pics

the really good value add from this post is for ashcroft CV users, this in situ hub swap eliminates the PIA issue with not being able to take the CVs out with the boot band clamps on..
