What's the process for checking and or performing trans service/fluid check on the Disco? Is scan tool necessary?

Just watched steps on you tube. Simple enough. Being a rover, is there anything I should watch out for as I am doing this? One of my weekend projects is to check and or change transfer case, trans, and diffy fluids. Previous owner had it dealer serviced so it hasn't been looked at in a year since I purchased.
I know, that's too long in between checking. One of the first comments I read on here when I first joined is " It's a Rover, if it's not leaking you gotta fill it back up."
